Ok Wedgies,

Question for you:

There is a bit of chatter over in the Chimp cage about a realistic output for a really well built 4.0 litre RV8.

http://www.pistonheads.com/xforums/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Without wishing to blow smoke up the Wedgies backsides I expect there are some serious 3.9/4.0 litre Wedge cars out there that are making better numbers than an average Chimp?

From what I have read I think an RV8 of this capacity has the potential to deliver 270hp at the crank, but it will need decent gas flowed heads and other induction mods to do so.

My feeling is TVR Power put a lot more effort into the early (pre-serp) engines.

When TVR started churning out hundreds of Chimps a month there simply wasn't the time or profit margin to flow the heads like they often did with the earlier cars.

So come on Wedgies what does your 3.9/4.0 litre Wedge really make on the rollers?

And what have you done to get it there?

When I had my 1991 400 SE Hotwire - according to the rollers it had 236 bhp at the flywheel, and 236 lb/ft of torque.
I think that there is a lot of scope for the pre- hotwire engines (flappers).
The engine had 65000 miles on the clock, and was original - ie it still had its original cam.

The best mod that was was fitted later, was the sc power plenum spacer, and act carbon trumpets.

My standard NCK Flapper 400SE at 25k (10 years old) Made 238 BHP so would have been a bit more when new.

Also for a comparison too a 3.9 engine with minor mods.
My test engine for the racer is a 3.9 LR engine I got of ebay, prob at least 100k, all that's been done, is New style front end, with crank driven pump, fast Road Camshaft, and plenum spacer, and remote throttle body. running on an emerald ECU.
Running with standard 95 fuel on a safe map it made 185 BHP at the wheels, so about 220 ish at the fly. running super with some boost I gained about 10% so this took it to 230 BHP, so about the same as a Chim/Griff 4.0 so I think the only mods they done on those engines was to fit a better camshaft. as said my test engine has standard heads, crank, pistons, rings etc all with a lot of mileage on them, plus they have not been touched.

I'm currently building a 4.5 engine with just DIY able mods, that I'm hoping to get 300BHP + from.

on the extreme scale, Dave Stuart is running a 4.1 NA Rv8 with 380 BHP, I know this does sound BS, but I've seen it keep up with 5.0 Rv8 Race Tuscan's that are lighter and running the same kind of BHP.

Any advance on 238hp?

Come on Wedgies, my old Chimp has a few more ponies than that with the following basic mods:

  • Rob Robertson Stealth cam
  • Dropped trumpets with SC Power bell mouths
  • SC Power plenum spacer
  • Full ACT induction kit with K&N
  • Pre-cats removed
  • Mark Adams Tornado chip
  • Mark Adams rolling road fine tuning session
  • Lightened flywheel
  • Uprated Helix clutch
  • A Wedge sticker with a line through it stuck on the door WW2 stylee wink
  • TVR Power monkey nut dispenser
Next on the list are:

  • ACT de-catted and flowed Y Piece
  • A pair of Rob Robertson stage 4 heads
  • 72mm plenum
  • 45mm blended plenum base with larger trumpets to suit
  • Ported & blended inlet manifold
  • More Wedge stickers with lines through them for the door wink
I would like to think all this will bring me just over the 270 figure?

There must be a few full house 400 SE's out there making over 260, surely?

There have been some on the BBWF rollers that have gotten over 260 plus as far as the owners know was standard, plus a lot can be down the the conditions and the RR and loss calculations.
Not sure you will see many standard Chim 4.0's getting 240 +

Also beating 2.8 and 3.5 Wedges don't count wink so you have to remove quite a few of those stickers. and if you want a real test get your self out on a track :P

Solitude's Ambulance White 350 is quite a spritely little beastie I'll have you know!

(even with it's break dancing rear end)

I hereby officially throw down the gauntlet by saying I am happy to take on any normally aspirated 4.0 litre Wedge you care to challenge me with.

There, that's it, I've said it now hehe

A 260hp 4.0 litre Wedge may have the edge on outright power but my Crimson Starmist wink Chimp should even things up on the power to weight ratio.

I freely admit a Wedge 4.2, 4.5 or larger will be a challenge, & I will hand any rare SX jobs over to my mate JD to spank.

The big question is who has the most powerful normally aspirated 4.0 Wedge then?

So come on Wedgies fess up if you think you're hard enough tongue out

I find this all very intriguing. My 450 has 102k on the clock now. Had a rebuild by TVRPower at around 30-35k and again had the heads refurbed with new piper cam around 75k. It revs extremely freely, I really have to watch it as it gives its best from 4000rpm and just spins up really fast from there way beyond the redline if you let it.

If the car weighs 1150kgs as quoted and given how quick (or not) it feels I would have guessed it was giving around 220bhp and similar torque personally.

Must actually get it on a RR soon though....................

Dearest Mr Chedder,

With immediate effect you are hereby officially banned from the 4.0 litre Chimp vs Wedge contest.

Your banned status has been created on the grounds that you have a hoofin great blower on your car.

Although you seemed like a nice bloke at BBWF it now appears you may be a cheating cheese eating laughing gas sniffin northerner tongue out

Yup still golfing Chedder me old pal, but only when my boyfriend lets me.

The salon is taking up a lot of our weekend time these days, we need every penny we can get for the civil partnership party.

Pink swans don't come cheap these days.

Are you still wandering about with that decibel meter?

Next BBWF I will have my ACT de-cat Y Piece on so the Chimp volume will be turned up to 11 ears

NB: Not all northerners are excluded by the way or I will be ruling out 90% of the Wedgies.

What is it with northerners and Wedges anyway?

Are they Whippet friendly or something?

Ey Up me 400SE "Flapper" 245bhp @ flywheel (BBWF2010 rollers on Morrisons 95 RON fuel)

Engine is ex chimp preserp 3.9, wedge flapper injection (50psi baseline to get 12.0 AFR @WOT), ACT carbon trumpets, 72mm throttle body by Mez & sparks by Megajolt but still running safe advance on a basemap.

Was 195 @ the wheels so for next season some more intake mods are in order and a mapping session to get the sparks optimised.

Still a way off the 275 quoted but I suppose its 275 "TVR BHP's" rather than SAE BHP's laugh

OK Wedgies, first off I have to say you have been (mostly) very honest & fair.

Cheddar has tried to sneak his heavy breathing supercharged monster in under the radar but I shot his whistling dairylea arsh out of the sky.

So far we have a 245bhp @ flywheel on Morrisons 95 RON fuel which to be fair is not too shabby from B@man.

But the engine is ex Chimp pre-serp, not sure how that makes you Wedgies feel?

It sure as hell makes me laugh like a drain laugh

I am genuinely surprised actually, I'm sure there must me a 4.0 litre Wedge out there somewhere with over 245?

But so far it's not looking too good for the Wedgies weeping

Come on boys is a Wedge with a hairdressers engine the best you got?

He sneaks in with a big hitter just as I was typing.

But is this car a genuine 4.0 litre?

We need details & evidence.

If its a proven 4.0 litre the Wedgies may well be back in the game.

Nay on top of the game!

Unless that is it's another sneaky Chimp motor in a cheese car rolleyes

Oh bks.....it looks like I'm not allowed to come out and play then!
No whippets here....just a daft Dalmation that will never see the inside of the wedge, too many white hairs!

Forgot to add on the first post, 124.9 db....wobble at back home 2010!!!

Oh dear, Oh dear, Oh dear....

Just looked at KelWedge's Profile and this is no 4.0 litre.

The car seems to be running a 4.6 litre.

Are we not looking at the title of the post Wedgies?

Disappointing chaps, very disappointing indeed.
