There is a small hole in the bottom of my overflow bottle (not expansion tank)
Anybody know what car they are from ?

My hand book suggests totally filling the expansion tank and half filling the overflow bottle - does this work ?

If it's only a small hole, parafin wax (much, but not all, candle wax) has a melting point above 100C (typically 135C), so you could dry the bottle thoroughly and drip wax through the top over the hole. Put the bottle in a polythene bag and plunge it into very hot water (take care!) first so that the wax doesn't instantly "freeze" when it hits.

Can't guarantee this repair, but it should hold until you can get a replacement bottle or track down a solvent adhesive that will do the job, and it's easy to redo if necessary.

depending wether its made of thermo setting or thermo hardening plastic you could use a soldering iron to "weld it up"
