Another silly thought it's hydraulic legs for each corner of the car to save Zig getting the jack out.

Well I'd foolishly left my camera connected to the PC when I went back out to crack on, so by the time I'd got some life back in the battery I'd made some progress which I didn't photo, so here's the next three steps condensed into a (staged) photo or two... Essentially once I had the thread correct I switched to an HSS knife (which gives a nicer finish than the carbide I'd roughed-out with) and pared the diameter down (a couple of thou") to match the switch. Then I knurled a grippy bit (technical term ) and switched back to the knife with a few degrees of taper dialled-in to give the final shape: Before parting-off to finished length I swapped the work to another length of alloy rod (the reason being that I want the diameter at the point I part the taper to match the diameter of the threaded rod) and set to with the external threading tool, 60 degrees, 1mm/rev. feed, 50 rpm, yadda yadda : Meanwhile, in my other workshop, the new toy is finally cleaned and almost ready for action, just needs a bit of electrical twiddling... 640 kilos of 1970 Colchester, it'll still be working long after I'm gone

Right, made a bit more progress... obviously I had to make a second 'thingy' (they are identical sizes, funny how perspective works!): The narrow end needs to be threaded to fit the end of the rod (let's call it, oh I dunno... a 'stalk' ); this technique keeps the tap square to the bore: ...then it was time for a quick trial fit... ...before tickling with a parting tool to get the mating faces the same diameter. If I could get this spot-on there would appear to be no joint - but I doubt I'm that good Quite possibly the tidiest threads I've ever cut!

Right, some jiggery-pokery gets us to this stage: from where it takes a couple of decisive cuts to get here: ... but the real nerve-racking, no-going-back bit happens when you take a hacksaw and... which leaves you with this: Still, on the bright side, it doesn't take more than a small amount of furkling and the end is in sight...
