I sold my Tuscan 3 years ago as I thought I would try a Porsche. Big mistake (No magnificence in its soul).

Im now coming back to TVR and did think I would go straight back to a Tuscan. However I am starting to think do I really need to spend 15k to have my weekend dose of incredible noise and a bit of sun.

Could I get the same thrill for half that amount?

Im not into speed or tracks, the car would be for sun and the odd show- it would have to be a softtop and make a lot of noise.

Would a wedge fit the bill? I don't know a great deal about them - would I be better looking out for a 450 or would I get the same thrill from a 400 or 350?. I know the 450 is pretty rare.

I know what to expect from any TVR and don't really mind the bills. I am borderline OCD so would want one that I could cherish and polish within an inch of its life.

Any advice appreciated.
John

Them Wedges a bit long in the tooth, might be better with a Chimaera (still fairly ancient I agree)

Probably best to have a test drive in say a 400se with some uprated/recent shocks so it'll go round corners nicely , plenty of noise if you try one with a flapper type induction , ask first if its a flapper !

My 350i is already quick for by todays standards, but i'd look for a 390 and up as they have the high performance engine and the even more aggressive looks, take your time finding an immaculate example and don't be afraid to get your hands dirty owning one!

I sold my 3.9 Wedge and bought a Chimera. It wasn't for me as I missed the raw performance and the noise so much. I went back to a Wedge and bought a 450SE thinking they were rare. I got the itch again and sold it, once again I had withdrawal symptoms only to buy another Wedge. This time a 400SE which is the one I have now. It's a beautiful machine and I love it. Perfect for weekend cruising and posing. This is the best Wedge I've owned as a fortune has been spent on upgrades and faults. At the beginning of summer I tried selling it on PistonHeads, but failed to find the right buyer. I have since spent over a thousand pounds on it, intending to keep, but, you may still be able to tempt me into selling if you're quick. Click onto my name and feast your eyes on that beauty. Why do I want to sell? Well the answer is simple. Tuscan. I've never owned one.

Very yellow ... My main concern will be the chassis as I dont have time to take the body off and if I get onw with rust it will drive me nuts. Ill pm you.

The Tuscan is the most amazing car I have ever owned. The whole experience and the noise was just out of this world. They should be in a fine art gallery.

Just wait till you drive a 400 or 450 at full throttle, they sure know how to give you that v8 roar too!

I totally agree that the Tuscan is a work of art. The chassis on any TVR is the backbone of the whole machine. On mine, its sound and treated as you are welcome to inspect. pm me and I'll answer all your questions. All the best.

Sounds promising. There is a 450 for sale not a million miles from me.
At the risk of getting shot down for being lazy and not using the search facility what do I need to be aware of ? (search is still down) ears

As you might've guessed: Rust! Check the outriggers especially. The rest is what you'd check with any car, but do get a few buckets of water or a garden hose when you're serious about buying it and check it for leaky surprises.

And however hard it will be when you've driven it, buy with your head not your heart.

Take the Wedge- particularly if it's a 450.
I've got a 450SE and a 2002 Cerb Red Rose. Both totally different to drive- the Cerb is far more forgiving but my god- do I have some fun in the Wedge and that noise- oh that noise!!!

Compared to a Tuscan it's pretty archaic and you have to properly drive them- but I guarantee it will put a massive smile on your face...go on, you know you want to biggrin

As mentioned, check the chassis thoroughly. Not just where the chassis is exposed but the parts that can't be seen so easily eg. the outriggers and where the outriggers meet the main chassis in all four corners where the water collects behind the metal plates. Go for a drive and listen for any unusual noises, engine, gearbox, final drive etc. check the clutch well, it's expensive to replace as its usually an engine out job. Warm the engine up properly and check for smoke out the back, oil pressure etc. Check for oil leaks, very common on the V8 engine. Inspect the fibre glass body for cracks or signs of previous damage. Always take someone else with you to get their opinion of it's general appearance. Use your instinct. Inspect as much as possible before the owner starts the car as once you hear it roar your heart may rule your head. Spend as much as you can afford as you usually get what you pay for with a Wedge. An initial cheap buy may turn out to be the most expensive in the long run. Good luck and all the best.

I pulled out of a garage in front of a friend (who has a Cerb and a chimp) without realising it was him as he was in his motorway hack.

I got a text from him later that day asking "how can you get so much noise out of such a small exhaust?"

Mine is just a box standard 350, and I think you get much more interest in a wedge from joe public than most other cars!

I did follow a Ferrari 355 spider yesterday and he was trying to impress some pedestrians and all he got was abuse!

Not sure if you get the abuse in the wedge, but you can't hear it if you do!

Hi John welcome to the mad place all thngs wedge...

There is not comparison from a wedge to a tuscan, ive had the plesure of driving a tuscan s and found it more twitchy than my SEAC at the mo but im getting there with the setup, the wedge is a different car to drive,
I would discribe as involving but all TVR's are involving that what makes them so more different and interesting compaired to other performance cars.
That has been said it the wedge is thee best sounding TVR ever made.
Im sure you know in looking for any kind of car im sure you will drive a few diferent cars, the thing to remember is that the youngest car will be over 20 years old, think if the last owners havent changed much then bushes, joints, bearing and all other bits will be old tired and may need changing making handleing interesting.
If you are looking for a good car look at what has be done mechanicaly, the cam is prone to go after 50000 mile if the engine has been living with moble1 pee water oil...
Look to see whats be done on the car, servicing...where...and what ie rebuild the sills and what else that has been done, a lot of these car are looked after by there owners, they are not like most of the speed cars that tend to be looked ater by dealers but there are plenty a that are well looked after, you need to drive a few, realy dosnt matter the engine size but it may come down to looks and the later 400SE 450SE are hot wire engines and have a better reliability bu the sound of a flapper that pops and farts like a tuscan on over run....hehe
These are good fun topless driveing mad machines that gets under your skin, they may not have the looks of the tuscan but they will turn plenty of heads and scare small children hehe
I was at the fastlane show last sunday following a porker into the show, there was a father and his son walking along infront of the porker and when i bliped the father looked back and grabed this kid out of the way, not sure he heard the porker hehe
Just get out there and drive a few, im sure you will find them interesting...there are a few nice cars on hear.

Exactly the same response I got when I rocked up at BBWF once at Ettington. I was banished to the naughty corner of the car park!

Not at all chummy you pointies, not like the rest of the TVR gang! biggrin
