Ive been having a few minor problems with the 350i with it not revving over 3500 revs.

Ive changed the old TPS for a newer one that I got from Carob, thanks mate, and made a spacer to get it to work.
Ive been all through the inlet to seal any air leaks and still no joy.

So, I think Ill have a look at the dizzy cap for fun, even though it was serviced weeks before I bought it.

No problems there, so I go to put the cap back on and line up the locating tab on the top... ITS 180 DEGREES OUT!!!

No wonder its been running like st.

Now, I really hope I havent jinxed myself as I couldnt get it out for a run because the kids are in bed and ive only just finished playing, but by god its gonna get the thrashing of its life tomorrow!!!!

Stu

Sorry about the swearing in the title.

Warm it up before thrashing it though, its a small miracle it even ran ok at 180 degree out.

I don't know much about Rovers, but have had that kind of problem on one or two different engines.
I believe the Rover dizzy has advance springs (i.e. timing not done by engine management).

So my suggestion is frozen advance wieghts.

If the dizzy springs/weights are frozen, the ignition advance won't be right at above 1500rpm (ish), and around 2500-3500 RPM seems to be the limit for engines with that problem....often the engine won't misfire either, it just stops going any faster....

My god, I think you've just answered a problem I had with a MK1 Golf many. many years ago!
It would perform fine up to 70MPH then not go any quicker (intermittently it would go faster). I changed all of the electrics in the ignition system, the carburettor, reground the valves etc, etc. I never checked the advance weights/springs!

Having said that, VW main dealers couldn't find the fault either!

EVEN MORE AMAZING .. is that my brother had this very problem with his .... Mk1 VW Golf !

He was baffled too, but I had a similar problem earlier with a Triumph six (2500) which had been sat for a long time on a garage floor.....(rest of story deleted for everyone's sanity).... and a good dose of the old fix-all WD40 and some fiddling around with a screwdriver (you can't get at the weights easily on the Golf dizzy...) and Bingo !!

and on a friend's buy of a Zephyr V4 also sat around for a long time (a horrid, horrid engine....)

Might be worth trying a new quality rotor arm, I've had a problem like this with an Intermotor one

Well

I took the top off of the dizzy, and took the plastic cover that says 'do not remove' because I can.

Couldnt see the weights, but could see the advance, the vac pipe non return valve was back to front so no advance when under load, i also gave it the technical 'whack' to free up anything in there (trained Mechanical fitter)and put it all together again.

I then took off the air flow meter (AFM) to see if I could spot anything wrong, again nothing obvious.

Put it back together and still no difference.

Decided to put it back by the garage, pulled it off the drive to move another car off, and it ran fine, even gave it some beans to make sure.

So its cured for the time being, and hopefully when i take it out tomorrow, but i need to find out what it was as an internittent fault is a pain in the arse!

Technical whack aside - the centre shaft should be moveable a little (about 1/8 of a turn or so) with your fingers, and you should be able to feel the spring pressure, and a little bit of slack.

If you can't move it at all then it's possibly frozen.
The definitive way is with a timing light, which should show advance when you rev the engine....

Er....as far as I know, fuel problems tend to cause misfires both ways (rich or weak) so as it doesn't do that, I'm more inclinded to blame something in the ignition timing but that's just my guess ....Anybody else ?

what do the spark plugs look like ?

Hi Stu,

Glad you found a use for the TPS, even if it looks like you had an underlying problem. Always glad to be of help to my fellow wedgers.

Had this exact problem with mine and changed everything and it turned out to be a bit of crap partially blocking the fuel line. Mines would rev no problem when stationary but wouldn't rev when it was driving. Get the fuel line off ond cleaned. Mine had new pre and post pump filters and fuel pump but that little blockage caused me mega hassle. The fuel pressure was spot on as I had a guage fitted so don't trust that all is well if the pressure reads okay on yours.
