Hello all,

I have been digging around for suitable mirrors for my son's Tasmin. His are very poor aftermarket mirrors, and can't be adjusted to view anything useful. I bought some after market Baby Tornado clones, but they didn't work, as they need to mount on the side of the door, and his holes are on the top surface - they just didn't have enough adjustment to level them, and to be honest, they were junky even if they did fit.

The car on the left is my 350i FHC; it's style of mirrors are the ones I would love to find (flags that pivot - happen to be power, but that is not important).

The car on the right is my son Stirling's car, note his mirrors do not mount on the side of the door, so the mirrors on my car work well as they hae a pivot to accomodate the different mount.

Worst case is a set of decent condition/quality flag mirrors that must mount on the side, and we fill the holes up top and try to blend the paint in.

Anyone know where to get some? (or have some to sell?)

Cheers,

Rob.

Hi Mate..A right pair of stunners!..Nice..Not sure what or where the flag type mirrors came from or if you can even get them anymore?..I have spent ages looking for a good set of suitable mirrors..If sterlings are connected to the small triangle on the window rail would the 350 style ones fit..I think these ones advertised dont have any guts though..I might be wrong...But something like this with manual or electric operation..If you click on the link and then select specials at the bottom..Hope it helps..Cheers..Ziga

Hi Rob

Mirrors on a wedge are a nightmare to find if you want the original ones!

You car has the early powered ones which are near impossable to find, you can wait months for a set to come up for sale and then they may not be any good.

So you can fit the pod type to the door/window upright then you have to find a set of workings for them. Which is the problem, as far as I am aware nobody has come up with a workings which fit. As the original workings are the same as the mirrors you have and are near to impossable to find!
But the pods are avaliable as Mark quoted from TETs, so you can get the pods new or they do come up with workings more often than the early type!

That's the original types for the car, what you can get to replace them is a problem all I can say is to some how you have to try as many as you can till you find a set which work for you, look wise as well as the view you get!

Good luck trying to find a set and please post up how you get on!

Andy

I did hear once that XJS ones fit on the outer door skin ok, may even have the same mounting holes as the originals on your car.

Had a quick look on google, as well as the chrome ones there appear to be some black ones which would look a little more original

Hi

They are a close copy of the original manal version. I was looking for a set for a FHC project which only had a single mirror from new! The set I was looking at is on e-bay item 190767151126

Tidiest option would be to get the later GRP pods and fit some ex-SAAB or Ford motor units in them... however the mirrors are still postage-stamp sized.

I did hear someone say the early RangeRover cast alloy mirrors were the same as the 'flag' type, but where the hell are you going to find any of those in decent condition now...?

Thanks for the replies.

The mirrors do not connect to the triangle, they are mounted on the door (and frankly too far back to be useful - so we may land up filling in the holes and mounting elsewhere).

I just sent a message to Trevor at TET, I bought backs for my flag mirrors from him years back, but have not seen the pods. Not a bad solution technically, but I like the other mirrors better for an early car.

On my flag mirrors I changed the guts, and they were the same as an Alfa's mirrors, so suspect similar can be adapted to the pods if we go that route.

I do have a friend that parts out Jaguars, so I will drop by and see if he has an XJS mirror we can offer up for fit. My recollection from my XJS days was that they have a curved base to match the contour of the door, and it wasn't just a plastic bit - it was the casting. Perhaps I can make something up. I also may try a little later version, perhaps XJ12, as I think they were more flag shapped, and the XJS were a somewhat rounded shape... foggy memory however.

Also, Andy, the ones on eBay could be a good option, hard to tell how they will look until on the car; but the benefit of these is my other son has an old Mini, and he has the cool looking bullet mirrors - but they aren't very good, and I think the shape of the glass on the original style is better. If they don't work for the Tasmin they could go to him. Hmmmm.

Thanks again - appreciate the input.

Thanks yet again - a couple look interesting.

I have been looking at every car in traffic for ideas - have a couple of months to figure it out as we are buried in snow at present.

The one issue I am starting to realize is that when they mounted it on the car they placed it so far back that it is usless - so I don't need to get so hung up on mounting it on the vertical surface versus the horizontal - either way I need to fill and paint... drats.

I will post a picture when it is sorted, for now I have found a picture that gives a closer up view of the mirror, so you can see the problem with mounting location. I assume the previous owner just drilled holes, mounted the mirrors, then sat in the car to see how their positions worked.

My 350i (Said by Mr Tank to be a serie 1 1/2...) has these kind of mirrors.
They are moving as a flag in the wind...
Any replacement available ???

If you don't mind losing the electric function you could put "Baby Tornado" mirrors on the car - Vitaloni was the company that made them I believe.

I know some after market ones have been made, and it seems the VW aftermarket guys sell them pretty cheap.

If you do find a replacement, and design to replace your mirrors I would be willing to buy yours - even if they are problematic for you, I would be willing to try to sort that out.

Best of luck - it's amazing how much of a challenge it is finding good mirrors.

..and by the way; on an early post the TET mirror pods were mentioned; they would be another option if you wanted a radical change.

I see Trevor of TET responded back to a message I sent him the other day; his pods would bolt through the black triangle at the leading edge of the winodw - and I imagine several internals would work, he suggests RoverSD.

If they are lose I'm sure they could be tightened up.

If you do decide to swap them out they'll be plenty of takers for the old ones on here

Not sure how to tighten them up if they swivel in towards the window - don't believe mine swiveled at all (but could be seized). If they are falling over so they aren't level, mine did that, I had to always keep at them by snugging up the allen key.

And agree with Danny, if you do swap them time for an auction!

Cheers,

Rob.
