I dont think its the ethanol thats the issue..Probably more so the rest of the additives they put in..Although i can understand new fuels eating through old hoses..Modern hose should be ok...Ziga

Well finally got the car up off the ground so I could start rubbing the chassis down ready for a fresh lick of paint before the fuel system gets redone.

This is gonna take a while.....

Hey guys,

whilst taking a break from rubbing the chassis down I decided to sit in the car for a bit as I hadn't done that in a few months and whilst playing with the gear stick I noticed the car appeared to have an extra gear:

R-1 3 5(?)
--2 4

I was under the impression 280i's only came with a 4 speed?

It might be worth considering while the car is off the floor checking the outriggers...although it can be a VERY dis-heartening thing for anyone but its worth checking....
Your going to need tons of cloth and degreaser before you rub and re-paint the chassis....You could use a power washer but i wouldn't until the outriggers have been checked...Just make sure any electrics...Reverse switch..Fuel sender...Fuel pump....or any diff breathers are covered.

Even though I'm getting too old and stiff to be restoring a Wedge i would still try if i had all the kit...Nice to see you working on it...Ziga

Most I think were 4 speed mine has a 5 speed I think its a "type 9" gearbox if I recall correctly.

So it could be a 5 speed box and that is the layout my 5 speed has.

That layout matches a type 9 5 speeder.

As far as I know, 5 speed was an option from certain date, not sure exactly when.

Type 9 is only slightly longer than a 2.8 4 speed box, and a little smaller in the gear case.

If you can get underneath, the type 9 has an extra case behind the main gear case.
This is because type 9 was stretched from a 4 speed box, and the 5th speed gears are added on at the back, so the extra case for it.

Cheers guys will have a nose around the gearbox today/tomorrow

Zig I've already read up on removing the sills to get to the outriggers so don't worry, no matter how much I don't wanna go behind there it's gotta be done at some point. Although a cursory inspection with a torch and a bit of poking has revealed that the outriggers seem solid, so just depends on the outer edges and corners that I can't see I guess.

I've managed to degrease 90% of the rear of the car and gave it a little rub and I found shiny metal after getting rid of the old paint and surface corrosion biggrin

Large amounts of the middle of the chassis still appear to be powder coated although there is alot of grease there so what it'll look like after I've taken that all off is another matter.

But with a chassis that so far seems to be in relatively good condition and the discover of an extra gear I'm approaching this with renewed vigour and hope to have made a reasonable amount of progress over the next month smile

Well now I've got a working drill and some wire brush attachments for it, progress is becoming fairly rapid. Hopefully I'm looking to slap some paint on the chassis by the end of the month so my question to you guys is what do I use?

2 coats of POR15 is currently what I'm looking at but does anyone have any other suggestions?

I've used POR-15 on mine meant to be very good stuff , I have also got a chassis coat to go over the top also made
By POR-15 for the extra bit of durability

Good luck it takes a while!

On the gearbox front it will be a type 9 if its a 5 speed , when coming to find one (if you ever need a replacement )
The type 9 box used on the V6 has a longer first motion shaft than on the 4 cylinder pinto etc. also the v6 motion shaft spilines can differ

The type 9 box was used in a lot in old fords , granada , sierras , mk1/2 escorts , capris , cortinas etc.

The other sill is off the car, not looking too bad lots of surface rust but it's still solid!

Think it's been a while since anyone has been behind the sill though laugh

Yeah someone has made these removable, drivers side was done really well but this side was terrible so I'm gonna have to re do it.

Quite excited at the moment as by the end of next week both outriggers will have been ground/sanded down and painted!
