Hi Peeps...Well after sorting out the fuel pump i get in her this morning and "Click" goes the starter motor..."Click...Click"...Then she fires...Go a few miles..Turn her off...get back in..Turn her on...Nothing..Just.."Click-click"..Bang with heavy tool..Nothing..Wiggle wires...Nothing..Then a van goes past with three lads in so i cadge a bump start..Get her home...Order a new starter...Jack her up..Wheel off...Starter out..Wait till the morning...

I think all the cranking for extended periods the other day when no fuel was getting through finished it off...I was surprised how easy the starter came out..So from now on i shall add to my boot full of tools ...A trolley jack...Wheel brace and Axle stands..Don't know why but my car feels bloody slow..rolleyes....Ziga

I have had an issue in the past where a poor earth and battery connection were not enough, occasional it would just click.

With the battery disconnected, did I say disconnected battery? Yep disconnected battery, must disconnect the battery. Disconnect it! wink Before doing this with a multimeter.

I measured 50ohms from the +ve battery side of the lead to starter post that the battery lead is bolted to. Cleaned them up and measured zero ohms, and it seemed to cure it.

But that was before I took it off......

Sure the cranking did not overheat the cables, especially the crimped parts?

Mark, as I'm sure you know by now, the starters eventually get fried by being so close to the O/S exhaust manifold. It's worth fabricating a heat shield to give it some protection.

So now we just have to wait for the 3rd wedge starter motor to fail...

Had to do mine last Thursday, but took the easy option of getting my garage to change it £220 parts + 1 hours labour
So £300 all in... But in and out in a day so I had G8RWL back for the weekend

I had that last year Zig new solenoid all sorted, however it's now the same again!
When I had it sorted last year, they said the Soly was full if water!
I'm guessing over the year the same has happened, gonna fit it this weekend hopefully.
Only 17 quid do not too bad!

That was nearly an option for me but it was relatively easy to get the old one out..Whether it will be as easy to get the new one in will remain to be seen.

Flapper cranking can be perverse. My 350i takes several seconds of cranking before it fires from cold, it always fires but it takes several seconds, I put this down to the length of time it takes the fuel to reach the fuel rail from the pump. I have thought about a switch in the cabin to run the pump for a few seconds before cranking, thus saving wear on the starter.

I now have another flapper on another non-TVR RV8 that starts virtually instantly from cold, which undermines the theory of "needs a few seconds to pressurise the fuel rail".

Mine doesn't lose pressure from the fuel rail until it has been left for a week or more.

The red/black wire to the started takes a hefty current and can get fried too so it's worth checking. I got a cheap landrover starter and it was brilliant! Smaller too so further from the exhaust.

Can someone post up where to get solenoid from, mines had little use since replacing it a little while ago although its out of guarantee it has starting sticking also but if I can just replace the solenoid it would be kinder on the wallet. Wooly.

Just found some of the bonnet heat proofing that i used on Delilah...Gonna make a heat jacket for the starter...Cheaper than paying nearly £40 for the same thing..Should do the job..Woven fibreglass covered in aluminium...
