Morning all,

many of you will have seen my 390 for sale a little while back...I had lots of enquiries but I was always too far away (Guernsey) or there was concern over the VAT. Does anyone know how I can get a confirmed answer on the VAT issue (Swansea dont seem to want to commit)? Also, if I were to include VAT and delivery to the south in the price, would it make the difference do you think?.... The price would have to increase but I wondered if it would help. Opinions?

It would have to be declared through the NOVA system - give the HMRC VAT Helpline a ring on 0300 200 3700

Maybe find a TVR-friendly garage on the south coast to sell it for you, and to sort out the VAT registration side of things. I doubt anyone is going to spend more than the average cost of a mainland 390 buying it, so you might well loose out I'm afraid...

Hi Wedggie, my point of view from someone who was interested and buying at the time would be that the actual price of the car was competitive even with the cost of VAT on top, that of course is if the car is as good as it looks which I have no doubt it is. The problem comes when trying to confirm this with a viewing and I looked at the cost of getting to Guernsey from the North of England which is the bit that killed it for me.

If the car was available for viewing in the south of England, even with the threat of VAT on top I think you stand a chance and I would certainly have viewed it without thinking twice and possibly bought it then deal with VAT later.

I think it is definitely having access to the car where you are that is the issues, there is even a chance that VAT should be paid at a lower than 20% rate and may not be payable at all!

I have recently re-imported my Chimaera from Belgium so have been through the NOVA process. If the car was originally bought in the UK then VAT would have been paid when it was new, so no VAT will be applicable as a secondhand sale. I had to pay no duty or VAT when i brought it back in, it just needed the ok from HMRC so that i could apply for a V5.

If the car has been in the Channel Islands since new then I am unsure but would assume VAT needs to be paid

Thanks guys.. That number was a winner.. Perhaps if I lend it to a friend in the UK so it would be available to view then, might belp.

Here is where things get confusing... Guernsey is outside the EU so even if the VAT has been paid once, if the car has changed hands whilst outside the EU, VAT is repayable on re-entry. VAT is 20% as we know, but there is a special 5% rate for classics and collectables, they tell me however that classics have to be over 30 years old, and collectables doesn't apply to cars, regardless of production numbers, surviving examples etc. so full tax is payable on the price paid for the car.

Looks like i'll be out of pocket either way. why do they hate tax dodgers over there but insist on encouraging people to do it with charging double etc!

Bit like how they ban cheap labour over here but then set up call centres in India and pay them peanuts...They think they make the law so feel they can break it but what they forget is that we actually make the law, They just enforce it...It just needs enough of us to stand up and be counted...But we just moan and then shrivel into the background again...So...Don't forget..For free fuel to cars over 25 years old..(Especially ones with the letters TVR in the name)..Low cost top quality beef and produce..Re-useable energies...Retirement age lowered to 55 with tax free savings/Earnings from 45 +...Higher levels of tuition for children..More engineering and manufacturing of exportable goods here in the UK...Very low toleration of illegal or fraudulent bodies of society..Death penalty for crimes involving children..Or pre-meditated murder...The administration of truth drugs to terrorist detainees with expulsion from the UK to follow and if found to be entering again via face recognition at the border control then hard labour will ensue..FOR LIFE!!!...Vote for the ZIGA party in this years erections...Oooppps...I mean elections... wink
