Does anyone know if my series 1 350i ('83) should have the ECU diagnostics port in the loom somewhere ?

Looking at using RoverGauge with this cable;

Fairly certain that ECU (the Lucas 4CU) has no on board diagnostics.

If you check out wedgeneering there is a lot of good info about making your own though.

..interesting - yes forgot about wedgeneering - will re-read the section on the custom diagnostics ...I am looking at putting in some form of permanent on-board diagnostics on a panel on the dash ...

also came across this, which although Landrover-specific still gives a lot of useful stuff on the 14CU/X - according to this the 14CU (flapper) does have diag, whilst the CUX (hotwire) moved to OBD 1-compliant ...

As far as I am aware the 4CUX box on the flappers does not have any diagnostic port. On my 500 Hot-wire Wedge with the 14CUX ECU there should be a special 4 pin port which I use with RoverGauge and the ECUMate box which are both very useful tools.

The flapper engine does not have a diagnostics port as I think you know it, no OBD or anything like that.

There is (was) a round connector on the lower front left of the engine that can be used to read a transducer on the front pulley but I am not aware of anybody who has used it.

The intended diagnostic for this kit is the Leyland/Rover Epitest unit (see ebay auction 331178166356, they come up every couple of months) which connects to the loom instead of the ECU and can see all of the bits the ECU sees. Don't get one without the manual because this tells you what all the settings are and make sure it has the Rover adaptor which was optional, it will have the same plug-hole as the ECU.

The flapper system is 4cu, not 14cu. I'm not actually sure what 14cu is, never heard of it before and from the link it looks like it was only used for one year on the p38's.
sorry my mistake - youre right its 4CU ..

Looks like Ill have to go down the custom route as per;

http://www.wedgeneering.co.uk/Lucas%20Diagnostics....

thanks all ...

Aye, it's not complicated; you could simplify it if you left off the simulation circuitry for the throttle pot and coolant temperature sensor. My second one has some extra flying leads to allow bench-testing of airflow meter etc.; what it really (needs when I get round to it) is a HV pulse generator to simulate the ignition pulses and then I can build a completely standalone diagnostics unit. At present I use a spare distributor, coil and a cordless drill biggrin

Some of the V8's I've seen have a diagnostic port near the front of the engine with a coil pickup that senses the stud on the front pulley.

However these quite often get broken then removed.

I've never seen one used nor the equipment you need to use it but I suspect it's quite useful to set up the ignition and measure advance etc.

The original SD1 Efi system had a 'Fastcheck' instrument available to franchised Rover Repair Dealerships.

In the day, I believe 'Fastcheck' could also be ordered through spares outlets too.

They do come up on Ebay from time to time.

I have never seen a set of written instructions, or accompanying user manual to go with the piece of equipment. I expect the Rover repair technicians all went on training courses similar to using their Technicians Training Manual and its accompanying VHS Video tape.

Some current SD1 Efi owners have these 'Fastcheck' testers but in the main there are collectors items as few know how to use them, mainly because one had to be very familiar with the Efi system to be able to interpret all the results.

These days a well read and cherished Efi Ops Manual along with a basic electrical measuring instrument is a much better diagnostic tool for the average owner enthusiast.

thanks for that - interesting to see the old Fastcheck devices - could be fun to play around with one if I can find one ...
