Thanks Simon/Ziga. Understand more about the metering unit after some bedtime reading. Quite a clever system really for that age before electronics got involved. I love screws/pipes etc.I have enough to 'fiddle' with at the moment Ziga fitting rear shocks. That top nut is a real challenge. furious Better with some holes cut in the boot though. You're absolutely right that mixture screw is really sensitive. The position it's in at the moment seems OK for throttle pick up; on the road who knows? eek Thanks for the replies. J C.

CIS works well (well sorta ok) if it has all the bits working and in not played with.
But of course who knows what the previous owner did.
Poor running can never be solved by adjusting the idle mixture on the fuel dist.
Far better to concentrate on the "running bits" get it running properly if you need to adjust the idle after far better to use the big screw under the butterfly (not the butterfly stop), that acts as a small bypass and gives a little more air which lifts the plate a little.

First you have to make sure the Aux air thing is clean and shutting off properly when hot, 'cos if it suddenly frees itself you will get a 3K idle.

Porsche used this system in the 73 and onward 2.7s an economy measure it was cheaper than the S T and Es which had the hard line mechanical fuel injection with it's throaty growl. (I miss that)

If you want to read about mis adjusted CIS cars do a search on "blown air box" and Porsche. The air box unlike on the 280 was plastic.

TVR who used the sytem 10 years later obviously learned from Porsche or more accurately Porsche home mechanics and stuck on a nice shiny metal one that didn't require an aftermarket pop off valve.

It's worth checking your hoses and ideally replace them if doing a fuel pump change.
I just had to replace a complete system, that was fitted last year due to them using the old hoses, that had started to degrade, so even though they had pre-filters, the hose was breaking up and going directly into the pump. also check hose is suitable for unleaded. a lot of fuel hose is not.

The black tar that someone said was in there tank could have been dissolved hose.

Absolutely correct Leigh the black tar was probably dissolved inner hose material. Mine had the substance from the tank outlet to the pump internals, all replaced with hose suitable for unleaded fuel and the swirl pot cut open and cleaned. There was some black tar in the tank outlets which I guess was the result of the remaining fuel at the bottom of the tanks. Most of this I scrapped out then flushed with cellulose thinners. Hopefully this, and the now installed inline filter between tanks and pump will catch any remaining debris. The filter is transparent which should alert me to any problem? Cheers J C.
