Engine has developed a noise from the around gearbox/clutch above 5,000rpm. Any gear, or in neutral, it's a slight rattling sound. Disappears below 5,000 and is slightly reduced if the clutch is disengaged, can't hear it from the engine bay only from inside the car. Below that speed, running as smoothly as ever.

There's also a bit of chatter from the gearbox when pulling away in first, and a slight noise when idling in neutral (goes away when the clutch is out).

Engine, gearbox and clutch are only 4,500 miles old after a rebuild, so could it be a bearing or layshaft? Could do without another big bill having spent so much in recent years. Any ideas?

Hopefully it is just the clutch bearing.

Exhaust is also knocking, resonating from further back but I'm not so concerned about that.

Hi James

The Cosworth motor is well known for some engine rattling especially if not up to temp. I had a Sierra. Cossy back in the day and it did it. The clutch could be the springs chattering especially if it has a few miles on it or brand new. Given that the engine transplant in your car is shall we say a bit tight I would be looking at the engine mounts, gearbox mounts and exhaust as it is likely that it will be something simple especially given its had a bit of fettling.

Hope to see you sometime fella... The Gredge is going well and good to stretch its legs in the better weather!

Thanks Jack

Gearbox mount is new so won't be that, engine block is similar to original Capri v6 so shouldn't have issues with that either. If it's clutch related, I can live with that but surprised it should start to go after so few miles.

Will get it over to Dan Taylor soon and see what he thinks.

Had it round at Dan Taylor's yesterday. Interesting that this sound can only be heard from inside, driver's side but not from beneath. Booked in to have the clutch out next month & fingers crossed it won't be serious.

In the meantime, if it gets worse it might be easier to pinpoint.

And it hasn't got any worse in all that time?
