Rev counter going wild

Hi yer
Rev counter on my 3.9 goes wild after hitting 4000 rpm, but the engine remaines smooth, ive been told it should have a resisitor fitted on the coil. Been on ebay and found this:,
Genuine Range Rover Classic 3.9 V8 Diode/Resistor Ignition Coil ERR40
Is this what i need please? and if so does it wire on the + positive and down to engine earth on the coil?
