1988 350i - Looks like I am going to have to replace the steering rack. Not power assisted. Is anyone aware if what the original part was and if it is a straight replacement or needs modification ? Would it be easy to convert to a power assisted unit ?
Many thanks in advance.

Hi mate...If you are sure the rack needs replacing..i:e its not the track rod ends..UJ's or wheel bearings then its always advisable to have the existing unit refurbished...I believe the manual steering racks were predominantly Ford cortina mk4-5.

The main reason for having you existing unit rebuilt is that you know it will definitely fit and line up and can be a lot cheaper than replacing.
Converting yours to PAS could be a bit fiddly as the connecting shafts may have to be changed, The only real differences between the two is the feedback whilst driving and the parking..Obviously the parking is a lot easier with a PAS unit but the feedback is sometimes preferred with the manual rack.

Give these guys a call...They do collect and deliver.

Thanks Ziga.
The rack is the problem. Not MOT failure but is starting to show a little play. Would rather sort now. Have mixed feelings about PAS. You are right though, best left as is. I have a Tamora and wrongly compare the two cars for driving experience which are of course like chalk and cheese.
Thanks for the advice.

Some chassis work may be required if you change to a power rack

the front drivers 45 degree brace ( the one by the top/bottom swinging arm 'C' section ) will need to be cut out and replaces with a brace like half an oval to accomodate the higher mounting point.

I considered it for my new shiny chassis then remembered that PS is for GIRLS!

Mine on a non-PAS '86 350i is a cortina markIV.
Dropped straight in, exactly the same.
