Well the battery has drained on the wedge over the past couple of days, so whilst it is charging I thought I would sort out the crappy wiring behind the dash and try to find out what's draining the battery.

I have a few questions about the dash wiring. First off I have a switch on the right side of the centre pod which connects earth to the top connector of one of the relays. Anyone know what this relay is so i know what the switch is for?

I also have this blue wire which I do not know where it goes confused

Last but not least does anyone know how this side panel is supposed to fit?

Cheers guys

Hi mate...The switch in the engine bay could be a manual override for the rad fan..Is the toggle switch connected on the side trim, The blue wire might be from that..However i did have a red wire hanging down exactly where your blue one is and that was for my indicators...If it is then they won't work.

That piece of trim should have a screw fixing..Albeit not that good on the end nearest the bulkhead..The bend nearest your hand should tuck behind the centre console...Cheers....Ziga

Cheers Ziga,

The electric fan over ride is the silver toggle switch next to my hand in the last photo, the one I dont know about is the TR7 type switch next to it (which was connected to the relay in the engine bay)

I will have a go at fitting the side panels now if I can find the hole smile

Oh sorry didn't see that until i exploded the view...Mmmm..Not sure..Could be an engine cut out?....Its probably a mission to try to trace it with that black wiring as well...Unfortunately these things can be a problem when people add or remove switches...Ziga

The side panel should tuck into the rear of the binnacle and the back end of it should be shoved up under the dash until it stays where it is.

Well that's how it works on mine, no screw holding either the left or right side.

Originally these curved panels were blank, the OP's has a switch etc. in it, I have a couple of gauges and a switch for the aerial (so I could play CDs without the aerial up).

Cheers guys.

Managed to get the side panels fitted (they were screwed to the bulkhead) and have found where the random blue wire goes to. It looks to have been an extra earth lead that went to the fuel gauge (as i could see a small tail on the same blue wire attached to it) but even with it disconnected the gauge is working fine confused

Maybe I will use that extra earth to try and get my other gauges working hehe

Just need to find out what that relay does now, got hampered last night after I broke down on a trip out rolleyes

Not had a play with the relay yet, but i have found what looks like an ancient alarm behind the engine with an odd rocker pendulum type thing. I will post up a picture later but with the amount of wires coming out of it is almost doubling the size of the loom!

I have tried attaching a new earth to the tacho but still the same result, the needle just seems to stay at its highest point as you drive along. The speedo still doesnt work which i will try to sort out later and i will trace through the wiring for the oil pressure gauge as well.

Does the tacho return to zero with ignition turned off then swing to max at turn on/ running? Or permanently stuck at max?

They are the same as i had on the 280i...Maybe try Douglas valley breakers or Bellhill garage to see if they have any...Ziga

Tacho returns to zero with ignition off, but with ignition on will go to its last high point (normally about 4000rpm). When driving it will sometimes drop down to 2000 then rise and stick high if I accelerate again.

I also noticed today if i brake hard the oil pressure gauge starts to work. I think i have some wiring problems hehe

Any good?

Also got the dash lights working last night. Only had to clean up the switch smile

The fibreoptic switch lights still aren't on though. Getting there slowly!
