I changed the oil the other day on the 350SE and the sump plug size was larger than I'd expected. I managed to take it off using an adjustable spanner, then put it back and forgot to measure it for size. I want to buy a socket piece to make things easier and safer for next time. Does anyone have any idea offhand what the sump plug size might be?
Thanks in advanced for any info.

19mm (3/4") rings a bell.

Reach underneath, set your adjustable to a "good fit" and then measure between the jaws?

Do you have a socket set? I'd have thought any half decent set would go up to 3/4" or 19mm scratchchin

I have two large decent socket sets that I tought would cover just about every size I would ever need, unless you're dismantling an oil rig. However, it seems not. It's definitely not 3/4 inch as I know it is well over an inch, probably more like 1 and 3/4 inch as this plug is big. Which is what surprised me when I started doing the job. I know it's done now and I won't need it until next time, but it's nice to have the right size socket in my set. I remember once changing a clutch on a mini and I had to buy a huge socket I believe was for the center nut or something. This also looks quite a large size. Any ideas gents? If not, I'll just have to get dirty again, slip under the car and get measuring.

A bit of "Googleing" suggests it could be 28, 29 or 30mm scratchchin

I think it works out at 28.57mm so a 28mm won't fit and 29mm is too loose...Someone also suggested on an EVO site that they had the same 1.1/8" and used a good quality 16 point 28mm and that fitted lovely...TBH if an adjustable done the job then i would stick with that, I mean how many times are you going to use it?.....Ziga

= 1 and 1/8"

As the engine is of American origin it would make sense that it is imperial and not metric ?

Just the jobwink

I just use "the one with all the engine oil on it" ;^) but 1+1/8" rings a bell...

Aha, as I'm 12 miles from my car I had a rummage and found a spare sump plug that I knew I'd seen recently which is indeed 19mm... but then the penny dropped that it's in amongst some Esprit spares so maybe that's confused me... easily done at my age.
I'll check tomorrow night if I recall and see what's on the 390; to be fair the car hasn't turned a wheel in over two years so it's been a while since I dropped the oil paperbag

My sump has the large on .. 1" 1/8 sounds about right.

I have have a Steve Heath supplied sump plug that is magnec and Allen key rather than large nut.

Must get round to using it one day.

Tony, as previously suggested, it is indeed 1 1/8" socket size you need. Just double checked as I replaced my sump plug a couple of years back with an SH version, but kept the old one in my spares box.

Thanks for all the replies gents. I have a large witworth socket that loosely fitted over the sump plug but I didn't want to chance it. I will measure against that tomorrow to see if 1 1/8 is close. If it is, then that must be the right size and will save me going under the car again. I need to buy the right socket as I don't like using adjustables just incase they slip off and damage the nut.

27mm fits mine as snug as a bug in a rug.
