Hi Peeps...Today i had the ARB bushes ..The Droplink bushes and the Leading link bar bushes replaced, Superflex were used..Now i had a clunk now and again say if i went over a pothole...I have had all the front end inspected with a pry bar and by someone who knows what they are looking at...Nothing was found other than one of the ARB bushes were completely shot.
Now that the bushes have been replaced the clunk is still there and now i get a clonk...And a clink if i go over a speed bump with either wheel...Say 10 mile an hour.
I also had a knock when i turned left earlier that wasn't there before....
All the bolts were done up tight, They were not torqued.
Are the big washers on the original leading link bushes fixed to the bush itself like a shock mount or sandwiched rubber bush?..As this was the thinking when the old ones were taken off, The washers were oval and severely corroded...The new ones didn't have any washers..Only the steel inserts....Did it need them...Has this caused the geometry to change which could cause these noises?...The outer nut and locking nut were not touched on the leading link.
Its strange how i didn't have these noises pre-bush but now i do...I will get the geo checked but there are no issues with anything vibrating or feeling loose and bouncy...Although the steering does pull a little to the left but that could of been the camber...Ill check that again tomorrow...Previously.....The steering rack was refurbed...I have had new inner and outer UJ's..The top and bottom steering column UJ's were changed and the bulkhead bush was also replaced...The ball-joints are in good nick and the wheel bearings were re-adjusted..Has this happened to anyone else...Cheers...Ziga

Had this on my Chim last year. Turned out to be very slightly loose bolts on the gearbox mounting cross member bracket that goes under the exhaust, dunno if that's the same arrangement on a wedge.

Hi Ziga, you know your car, but I thought I knew mine, I'd had the clunks for 4 months, I also thought it was coming from the front, I replaced the front ARB's refitted the shocks both sides, replaced the arb drop links as I was convinced the noise was coming from the front, had all the front suspension apart and found nothing wrong. It was only when I had a new clutch fitted that I found these loose bolts so just tightened them drove for 1/2 a mile and all noises gone.mrzigazaga said:

Interesting, fyi I have polybushes fitted all round, could be the new bushes you have now have less flexing/play than before now everything is tight the flexing transfers to the next weakest point maybe ??blaze_away said:

That was my thinking..Ill wait until it stops raining and jack it up for a better look...Cheers...ZigaMine clunks and clicks on the front and it's down to a tiny bit of play on the rose joint drop links. If I remove them, pack them with grease and refit then they are quiet for a month then the noise comes back. I did put the old rubber jointed drop links back on and all was quiet but I put the rose jointed ones on again as the handling seemed marginally tighter. Try bouncing either corner to see if your can hear the noise then?
hi zig, you should have put 4 washers back on both sides, my ones was crap, so I got brand new ones from a place called old partstore .net,thats where the clonk is coming from, the tie bars are moving about, the washers that go to the body have a collar on them to fit the round hole,the washers that go too the nut side don't have that,from a mk4 Cortina or mk 3 0r mk 5.the man you need to speak to is d.newmark@btinternet.com they was 1.43 each a few years ago, you need 4 inner ones,and 4 outer ones,he sell the as a kit for two but he will sell just the washers as many as you like,maybe you get a big order up with him, as these are like rocking horse st to get

I have the same clonking sound. When I had my gearbox out I made sure everything went back nice and tight. I had the same sound before and after the box was out and in. Today I went for a brief spin switched off the engine and let the car roll for a bit to hear and feel where the sensation is coming from. My theory is that the body appears to be moving on the chassis - my next move will be to replace all the rubber packing and re-fit new bolts on the body mounts and re-tighten the front tie bars which I thought adjusted the castor angle on the front wheels...let's see.

Hi mate...You could be right....Although the Superflex bushes have a collar on and initially they don't use the washers...Maybe it still needs them...You are also right about them being like rocking horse poo...Ill try the info you posted...

Well my theory was spot on it would seem but may not apply to everyone else I disclaim....But I was able to I sus out that the body on my car was indeed rubbing and creaking on the upper body mount in the engine bay on both sides but was evidently worse on the N/S. Some hefty rocking at the front end confirmed this. I have some 5mm rubber packing to hand so I jacked up the body at the point nearest the underside of the body and chassis mount which was the headlamp recess - this separated body from the chassis with enough clearance to insert the rubber packing between the chassis and body before dropping the jack. This was repeated on the on O/S and to my delight.....job done no more clonking.

Thanks mate but i don't think its that..The fact that it was not doing this before the bushes were fitted and is now makes me think its something to do with the new ones...The washers as mentioned are the only thing missing from the equation so I'm going to see if i can source them...Thanks for the info though...ZigaMight be worth a punt Mark you never know...
