Afternoon All.

Possibly a little bit of a pointless post this...
Went out for a spirited drive Sunday morning, whilst driving, heard this loud bang and a series of smaller bangs right after.. with the alarm bells ringing, quickly pulled up and looked under bonnet - nothing seemed to be out of place.

Decided to walk back up the road to see what caused the noise and found a metal bracket with a small length of steel bar close by, couldn't see anything else so returned to the car and popped the bonnet again.

after closer inspection, it looks like the bracket has come from the offside ARB mounting point as there wasn't one matching the other side, it seems to be bolted at the top and welded at the bottom. however, no idea where the length of bar came from ( if at all the TVR )

I carried on with my drive albeit at a slightly lesser pace - no other noises or bangs and returned home fine.
Didnt take any pics but will do and post up.

On a different subject, I have bought replacement gaskets for the rocker covers and sump, going to book it into the garage for these to be fitted / the ARB bracket to be fixed and also my new HT leads fitted..

Further to my post regarding the Vacuum advance unit - pleased to say the car hasn't stalled since it was fitted and the timing sorted.

Hi Dom..That bracket is supposed to hook in at the bottom and bolt in to the top...Someone has probably broken it..Not sure if the bracket is mk2 granny...Or Cortina mk4-5.

Are the bushes ok as you may as well do these if you are replacing the ARB brackets...Cheers...Ziga

If its the ARB bracket, they are bolted through the chassis at the top, and there is a tang at the bottom which fits into a slot in the chassis - and they do come out by accident in use. There is a mod in the Bible to drill the lower end of the ARB to fit an additional securing bolt. Highly recommended and very cheap - a nut/bolt/washers each side.

Were these brackets ford items? I know I bought some new ones years ago and fitted poly bushes and have never had a problem with them since. Rocker cover gaskets you can fit yourself its easy and could save a few quid.

The tang bit quite often fractures but it sounds like the bolt end has gone on yours and it's fallen off.

I was looking into alternatives and possibly a VW van one might fit, but will need an extra hole drilling. It should then be fit and forget though, as opposed to busting.

I changed my ARB brackets and bushes for replacement ones as per flea link. I've not had a squeal or rattle from them since.

Both old brackets are going spare, although they are not a matching set and had been drilled for the additional securing bolt. See photo. Dom if you need them then let me know.

Cheers

The ARB brackets on my old girl are TVR original adaptations with the bolt welded to the clamp top and bottom, so no chance of it coming off.

Cheers Keith and Dix for the offer of brackets.. If mine isn't easily fixable / salvageable, you may find you have a email wink

Just found them in the Garage Dom. They are yours if you want them might need a touch of straightening in a vice mind.

Morning Guys.

Didn't get the chance over the weekend to get the wedge up in ramps however, have managed to take a few pics of the bracket / ARB. The bush is missing completely so will need a new one.

see pics below.

The bracket looks rather deformed. Keith / Dix - Thanks again for the offers of brackets but I think I'd be happier if they were completely replaced with new bushes also. will do the bolt mod to the bottom flange also.

Thanks again.
Dom

ps. would you drive it as is without the bracket ?? have a couple of meets within the next week and would like to attend if safe running on one bracket..

The lug is buggered, I personally wouldn't drive it especially spirited but the other guys will know better.

I broke two of these, swift changes in camber and direction seem to overwhelm them. Steve Heath ARB bushes and mountings were the answer, but he no longer manufactures frown

Hi Dom...I wouldn't drive it if there is nothing holding it in place...It can effect all aspects of handling and even braking..Get the brackets and get it done ASAP..Its not a massive job, In fact you could do it yourself...
Bushes are cheap as chips...I used the Superflex and they don't squeak like the polyflex..Or there are the OEM type...

I have broken these in the past. The main danger comes when you break them mid-corner and the car suddenly changes handling characteristics. Other than that they are reasonably predictable to drive, just don't push it too hard in corners. Straight line steering and braking is actually improved without the ARB mounts as there is less wheel-wheel coupling = less tramlining.
