After my under car degrease and clean at the weekend I noticed my NS engine mount looks split now the crud has come off

I also noticed the NS manifold as it sweeps under the car is nigh on touching the chassis rail so clearly these mounts are sagging / past there best

Have searched for replacement engine mounts and quite confused by the range of prices......from £15 a pair to over £100.........anyone fitted / replaced theirs recently and what did you use?

So I have a few questions: -

- Is it worth getting the more expense ones?
- I've also seen mount restraints.....are these worth using as well and do they lift the engine higher?

The key to lifting the engine higher is to slacken the bolts that go horizontally, then jack up under the sump to take the strain (use a spreader, e.g. a wide steel bar or hardwood plank), then do up the bolts tight, then remove the jack.

You might get 5mm more by doing this.

Engine mounts - in case it helps any.

I remember (and it could be wrong) that those engines mounts started their life as Triumph L6 mounts, and were/are in everything from the 2000 saloon, Vitesse, through to TR6 and Stag. Triumph used to price parts by the model they were destined for (bastrads....) , so you can get a BIG variation in price for what is actually the same part. Oh, by the way they had different Triumph part numbers too, for the different prices !!!

I think the SD1 used those mounts too.... so don't worry too much about prices - check the rubbers are bonded properly, as they tend to peel after a while.

(all assuming I have remembered that correctly.....)

Make you right there mate...When i was looking for an indicator stalk for Delilah i was amazed to see just that...Essentially they were TR7..40 sobs per side + Vat & Carriage..Same thing listed for a Stag...90 sobs a sides + Vat & Carriage and these were second hand...eek

Yeah, that seemed to be a BL/Triumph policy for quite a while, whereas Ford Europe (as far as I know) had one part number, one price, even if it did cover several vehicles.

From memory, (may have changed now) the Vitesse, Herald, and 2000 Saloon was typically cheapest option, and TR6 and Stag most expensive - as you would expect - Robbin' B**stards.....

The Enthusiast clubs like TSSC even had a 'common source parts book' which I saw once a long time ago - very interesting stuff. I guess they will still exist ??

You may find only the V8 BL cars came with the solid Metzeler eng mounts the others had a tube void in and wont be man enough scratchchin cheap pattern mounts wont last with the V8 unfortunately solid hollow or otherwise frown the SC Power poly ones have got through the early issues now by using a different poly and will cope with more welly than stock mountings. http://www.sc-power.co.uk/pages/sc-power-engine-mo...

In case this helps -

Having messed with Triumphs for a LONG time - but not Rover V8 - the early/original mount types did seem to be solid right through, whereas the Spitfire and 4 cyl ones left the steel tube hollow/empty. As I remember, the 4 cyl rubbers were shorter than the 6 cyl ones, and were less 'beefy' in general. Later on there seemed to be a rationalisation and/or mixing up, and it got harder to tell the differences. It's quite possible now there are cheap knock-off versions around too.

I never did manage to shred a Triumph mount, even with tuned 2500 engines, but they would still fall a good deal short of the V8 torque.

Somewhere in my files I've got a hard copy of the source file which I used for my TR6 rebuild. It listed the part number and then cross referenced it against all other BL/Triumph cars that used the same part and gave their corresponding number. I'll have a dig in the various boxes in the garage loft at the weekend to try and find it. It was utterly invaluable for the 16 years I ran my TR6, especially when scrap yard hunting.
