I am thinking about replacing the old 14CU ECU on my 350i with a modern unit. Does anyone have any recommendations as to which type to go for?

What are your objectives? I don't think there are any direct plug-in replacements (other than another flapper hotwire ECU).

Hotwire!

pretty sure moving to a modern arrangement would be quite costly unless you went down the DIY efi type route

is yours kaput?

I have a 400 engine which came with the original hot wire AFM but without its ECU, so rather than buy a replacement Lucas ECU I am looking to upgrade to more modern technology.

when I had my ecu issues, i found that david Gerald has some brand new ecu's gathing dust on their shelf.....it was a while back but if i remember correctly there was a deal to be done if anyone wanted one.....ie cheap

i couldnt have a standard one given my engine mods but for a normal wedge it should be ok

give them a buzz.......ask for a price.......then negotiate :-)

Can I mention the downside of upgrading to hotwire.

The pops and bangs.

Stick with what you have biggrin

Alternatively go down the megasquirt route, keep your pops and bangs with an updated system.

ECU for a hotwire. You could start with one from ebay for a range rover and then source a suitable chip, or not?
Original tuning for rr is not ok for a wedge. So probably it will run, but not to your liking as you don't want to offroad or tow anything.

Still on a flapper myself and have a spare to keep me going....

I may have inadvertently caused some confusion earlier, I thought the OP wrote "4CU" (flapper), but he actually wrote "14CU" (hotwire).

Hotwire is much more civilised than flapper. If all other components are present then the cost effective option has to be to buy a hotwire ECU and pay one of the specialists to maximise the performance.

I though the Hotwire system was 14CUX?

14CU predated 14CUX, both hotwire.

Thanks for your comments, does anyone have experience of the Emerald K6 ECU?

The k6 is my current ecu of choice, have fitted loads of them over the years, a very good choice, does everything you need.

Hi Mickanel i went with a DTA S80, very nice bit of kit with lots of options and tuning protential so i could get rid of the darn dizy but there are plenty of options out there and all are good.
Some will say you are taking away the originality, i say it is a good way to help the car get through an MoT and drag the car ticking and screaming into the 31 century.
