I think you've cut away a bit too much around that valve, Alan ;^)
Think you might be right.

Looking at the port aspect of the head shows it's not a great design.

Well it is a 1955 design I suppose - probably not changed much since then.

What about wildcat heads - how do they compare, I wonder?

I'll tell you what has changed - the amount of alloy they use in casting them (not the RV8, heads in general...).
CAD/CAM has a lot to answer for when it's used by accountants rather than engineers; if the maths says that you can get away with a 3mm wall to resist the temperatures and pressures, that's what they use. They ignore the effects of heat cycling so the number of head failures due to cracks has gone up exponentially in the last decade or so.
On the plus side, the RV8's sand-cast construction means it has way more alloy in a lot of places than it needs which is why it's been relatively easy for clever people to bore, stroke, port and tweak it for the last 50 years biggrin
I dare say with some thought (and Rev's cutaway for inspiration) it'd be possible to get a 5-axis CNC to reshape and straighten the head ports for better flow...

Wildcat are straighter bigger and give a more verticle slingshot to the back of the valve. If you look down my throttle bodies you can see the valve.
