Spot on Mr GB. I wonder if that is why we have been seeing premature cam failures in Wedges where Rover P5's and P6's and Rangey's never had this trouble? Due no doubt to the owners following the latest fad light oil with negligible zinc levels. I have seen cam failures on cars at 60k that I have inherited with 40-50k on the clock, but in the 400SX where I have had full control of the oil since 6,500 miles the cam is still going strong. I know it's a small sample size, but there you go. Also, once a cam lobe goes and distributes a half ounce of metal into the oil, surely other problems follow?

Well as predicted at 70k the 400SX did need changing and a new filter too - make a mental note that I have only one FRAM left "in the stores" so will need a new batch next year. This time just over 5l left so a slight mess on the garage carpet!

Also I found that blowing down each hole of the remote filter housing flushes a half pint out of the oil cooler, so that's worth doing. My pump primed within 10s so I have no worries there.

I think the cam & lifter problem is part low ZDDP oils and part ste quality lifters from a certain blue box supplier.

Anyway my google fu is weak, anyone know a high ZDDP 10W40 off the top of their heads?

Each manufacture should list the Zddp level for each of their oils on their website. If they don't then I would move on. When I had my Esprit S1 I actually used Mobil 1 V-Twin motorcycle oil 20w50. This oil was/is meant to be the old Mobil 1 of yesterday year before the Zddp levels were mandated to be lowered . Before the Mobil 1 I was using Valvoline VR1. Now after the switch I noticed straight away that the engine was much quieter with less cam noise. The Lotus 907 engine is a DOHC just incase you didn't know. I ran that oil for 6 years and had zero issues. It's popular with those running older exotics, Porsche Ferrari Lotus etc..., here in the States
