On my 400SE, the exhaust manifolds run parallel to two of the main chassis rails and are so close that they occasionally knock against the chassis when the engine rocks on it's mountings. This means that the chassis rails must get fairly hot at these points. The powder coating has gone and the rails are rusting. What can anyone suggest to rustproof the chassis rails that will withstand the heat of the exhaust? Waxoyl and POR15 don't appear to be heatproof. What do you guys use?

Halfrauds sell a black very high temrature engine enamel paint for painting rusty manifolds on cars and rusty exhaust pipes on motorbikes etc. That should do the trick. I've used this on a rusty exhaust on a motorbike that gets extremely hot and it lasted for years.

Hi mate...You have just reminded me of a job i was meant to do on mine...I may have an answer for all of us...For now though treat the area with rust inhibitor and paint with a good heat resistant paint...My solution should be ready soon...smile

How about using the por15 and then using some exhaust wrap or sheet to protect the chassis afterwards.
don't just spray over the rust with waxoyl or it will spread underneath it.

I POR15'd the Racer Chassis, and I run Griff Headers over the chassis rails, as only way to fit a Rv8 in the narrower S1 chassis.
Manifolds are the hottest part of the Exhaust, and I run the car hard, plus it's spend a day on a dyno. POR15 may not be ok for direct use of Exhausts, but its very heat resistant, and is fine on the chassis next to exhaust.

I had a look earlier and my downpipes touches in a couple of areas..My starter motor is also very near the exhaust...I think a couple of wraps of heat reflective matting on the chassis held on buy jubilee clips or foil tape may be the solution..Definitely treat it first...

These people have some interesting stuff...
