Hiya all,

Attended Pembrey circuit last weekend and put petrol in the 400SE.

Whilst parked up I noticed something dripping from the back, quite near the exhaust tail pipe off the under bumper spoiler.

Immediately thought petrol leak, and bearing in mind how much of a faff filling these cars can be as in equalising the tanks I guessed I may have over filled it, waited till the filler went "click" yet only showing just over half on the gauge.

Nonetheless still a worry, especially so near the hot stainless exhaust, although having said that there is no smell of petrol in the car or the boot....

Now I've just recently moved house and inevitably the new garage was immediately filled with junk hence the wedge was banished to living outside, and the Welsh skies have decided to empty their entire stocks of H2O over the past few weeks so I'm wondering if the wedge has collected water in come rear cavity, again maybe the under bumper spoiler and now the weather is dry I'm noticing it dripping out? Once again the boot floor is totally dry?

I'm just hoping because of its intermittence its not an actual fuel tank leak or pipe leak?

Any similar experiences?

Jay

Is it definitely fuel dripping out?...If its the exhaust side then it could be leaking from filler neck...Or even balance pipe...

It doth take some time to fill up what with two tanks balancing out. First click for me will be around a half or tad more if I leave it at that. When I want a full load it will take some time between clicks.

First and obvious question is to make sure it is not petrol, though I understand there are breather pipes that comes to both or one side? I have seen 1 400 weeping out in the past but not noticed it on mine, not that it stays brimmed long enough. I would be having a look see to check. Has the sniff test been applied?

The only place I get water pooling is in the engine bay. The rear "spoiler", not sure how water from above would get in just standing there. You could make sure the hinge/strut bolts are sealed up.

Thanks both....

Now that the car is stored in a dry environment and if I avoid going out or getting caught in the rain I'll see if it stops, but it's intermittent, also if it happens again I'll dip my finger and have a good sniff, or drop a match on it.... moving the car out the way first of course 😳

Next time I put petrol in I'll pay more attention to trickling it in too, see if that makes a difference

Thanks again

If there is a leak lower down, chances are it is leaking now. I would still have a shufty, the tanks come back a bit. Makes more sense when you see them.

I have over-filled a couple of times...Once very badly and it was actually quite scary as it was pouring from the cap and i mean pouring, I must of lost a couple of litres..In an ancient Belgian woodland and people walking about were smoking...eek

Normally it will pish out of the breather which comes out by the N/S rear wheel...Its connected to the filler neck and runs through the boot under the carpet at the top of the boot....Anywhere else and its time for further investigation.

We had a landcover 110 V8 in work, twin tanks and it needed it but there was a switch to go between tanks. The nice person using it before me left it switched on to the reserve tank and nearly empty, I picked it up and thought it was main tank empty and being late in the day and very hot when I got it, I pulled into a station to fill up. Opened the rear main tank filler and this stream of petrol, the same size as the filler neck, burst out and soaked me from the chest down in 95ron, really dripping in it. Wonder if that comes under the heading of over filled and coming out the cap.......

I have had this on my 400se.If I fill it to the brim with cold fuel, on a hot day the fuel expands and comes out of a beather that exits at the rear on the near side. I had it in Andorra last year where it was 40c.

I heard there was a drilling well there as they thought this was a new oil field?
