I've never seen/heard of a wedge that has been converted back to a manual steering rack. Is the pas system that bad? My previous wedge being the 200 had a manual rack.
I'm guessing it's just a cheap fix for the MOT. If a power steering system is leaking, it's a fail, so converting it to a manual rack is easier and cheaper. I wonder if he's kept the power rack, as it can still be refurbished and fitted. However, if the power rack is no longer available, getting hold of one, even second hand would be difficult and very expensive.Tony. TCB.

Ha ha that's funny! I had to change the gaiter due to a split right at the narrow end (it was otherwise OK and dirt-tight) and when the old one came off there was about 10cc of oil stored up in there!Tony. TCB.
So if it had properly split, it would be leaking too.
As such what the MoT tester doesn't see, the MoT tester doesn't fail. Besides the leak is quite slight I barely have to top up the reservoir in a few thousand miles.
The PAS wasn't working - don't know if it was the pump or the rack, but I had all the parts for the conversion available for nothing. So you're right about a quick and easy fix for the MOT.
Besides, the FHC doesn't have PAS and it drives just fine.
I sold the parts to another wedge owner for not very much.

If I'm not mistaken, the last second hand power steering rack and pump setup I've seen was for sale at a four figure sum, and that was a while back. So, you can see reinstating it would be difficult and costly. It seems some lucky guy has got himself a bargain with yours. On the plus side, your car does look good in general, and it's red which is a popular colour for any super sports car.Tony. TCB.
well if you wanted to go PAS you could always use an electric assisted column, as that would only be about £300, IMHO thou the original system. is a lot better.
One advantage of the electric system is you can turn it off. I have it on the racer, but only ever use it when parking, loading etc. so in some ways you can have the best of both with the electric system.

S doesn't have power steering and it is only an 'issue' when not moving. Electric power steering is a reasonable retro fit (Corsa B set up?) so no great shakes money wise. Less of a drag on the engine too! Win, win.
Yes got I've Corsa B, just a shame AFAIK still no ones does a controller that works correctly, so hence needing to fit a switch. there was a guy who was doing some research, he was going to let me know if he ever got it to work correctly. but this was over a year ago.PV7998 said:
To be honest when you get up close it doesn't look as good as it does in the photos - but it still looks OK from a few feet away and it's an MOT'd runner.
The FHC I hope to start on in earnest pretty soon - doors, mirrors and window frames are going to be first and I'll be posting pics.

Asking on behalf of a French mate....
you refer to a knock on the nearside suspension. What do you mean by this? It has it had a knock or is there a knocking noise?
Dave
A knocking noise on the nearside suspension?...If its the rear then i would certainly check the hub nut..You will have in and out movement but not up and down..Or it could be the UJ's..Inner and outer each side and then theres the prop...Worst case would be the diff cradle that has snapped!...Its ALL fixable though so don't let any of what i just said put you off...Ziga

Actually it's mine.......if there was a plan for it involving a Scimitar then it wasn't anything to do with me.
I've got a 350i FHC that I want to concentrate on, and I can't see me using the wedge as a daily, so it's for sale. I'm not desperate but I could do with the space, the money and without having to worry about it.
It's obviously not in pristine condition - but the price reflects that I think - the big question is whether a buyer would look at it and reckon that for 3k more he'd get a car that needed less doing to it.
Here's hoping...........

A nice white 350i just gone on flybay. Love the inside anyone on here
I met the owners at last years Wedgefest...Lovely couple and i was hoping to see them at this years or next...Don't look like thats going to happen now though...Unless the itch for a more powerful Wedge gets scratched...I think that'll be us then! Thanks for the compliment and yes we are sadly selling the wedge as it just doesn't get used enough. Our other option was to put a supercharged 4.6 v8 in which we happen to have waiting for a home...but we just don't have the time these days. Must be getting old! Steve & Andrea
