Headlight Lifting Mechanism
Discussion
Hi info needed please. Just turned my attention to the headlights during my rebuild and I'm missing a part. The passenger side pod does not have the short connecting rod from the motor to the rose jointed adjustable arm. It looks as if it must have a square hole which attaches to the lift motor drive, the other end bolted to the rose jointed lever. A TR7 part looks similar but is listed by Rimmers as not available. Short of making one, is there any other source please? Can't understand why the previous owner kept all the other linkage but not this one arm. Thanks for any help. J C.
Great, thanks Marcus. Can't really understand why that part is missing given that the previous owner "collected" and boxed all the parts over 14 years! More curious was the lump of wood wedge inside the nearside pod?? The motor assembly I found in the boot and when power applied does seem to work. As I said Marcus I've got the adjustable link rod but not the short link from that to the motor. I'm assuming it must have a square hole on one end to fit onto the motor drive shaft, the other end a pin which locates into the adjustable link? Are they handed by any chance?? If you manage to find one Marcus that would be great as I think supply could be a problem. Obviously beer tokens would be forthcoming. Many thanks in anticipation. Cheers John C.
I meant to say that mines fit differently from Keith's. Keith's motors are attached to the engine bay wall in the pod, while mines are attached to the floor. if you go onto youtube look for my channel, tvrMarcus1875, there are a couple of pod videos. One showing the flash, and the other showing the access holes I have, this one also shows briefly at the end the motor itself and you can just make out the bracket John is missing. (Plus there are a few other TVR ids there as well if your bored!)

Thanks Keith for the informative pic. Judging from that I think I have all the bits except for the arm from the motor. Marcus, my mate at work has just informed me he thinks he's got a pod assembly from a TR7. If so, I'll see in the next couple of days what he turns up with. but will let you know, reference your very kind offer. Did I read some where that the headlight flash operation was not fitted on early Tasmins or 2.8i's? Only operating when the lights were raised? Again thanks for the detail pic Keith and Marcus for the offer. Cheers John C.
Background info -
Most BL cars used cables/wires for their wiper systems, but Ford and others also used solid links/bars ...The bar system typically uses a crank lever which looks generically very like the Wedge one.
I think that the crank on the wedge motor is actually off a solid bar wiper system, and is in fact off a Hillman Hunter, or is a very close cousin .....
Can't confirm this, but it may be of use to someone.
My 1982 has a separate flash which works, and raises the pods, but it's wired to the ignition.....so only when engine running

Yup Andy I agree. My flash only works with ignition on.
I opened a Spitfire wiper motor for bits to fix my Wedge wiper motor, the only difference from the pod motor was it missed the manual raising knob and the internal raising screw. The actual motor was identical.
Let me know how you get on with your mate, i've none in the hut so they are defo in the wedge cave.

Cheers all. I've not really investigated the flash function on my car yet, only that one headlight seems to work OK without a flash function. The other modified with the "Wooden special fit!" Interesting about the Hillman Hunter motor assembly. My mates a hoarder, I don't think he even knows what he's buried under his various ongoing projects. The column switch does have the spring loaded position for headlight flashing but that maybe the generic design of the switch? I was surprized to find under the centre console, after modifing the steering column bulkhead bush, a LED generator for switch lighting. In 1984? Not that effective I hasten to add. What else will I find?? Cheers again all. John C.
(Hillman Hunter comment)....
Oops, what I meant was, yes they are TR7 assemblies, but the motor arm looks the same as a few solid bar wiper systems, the Hunter being one of them.....
Just the motor and the arm and rod assy was used in wedge, all the other castings and mounting brackets are of no use.
The motor itself is the same as nearly all the two speed Lucas wiper motors. (apart from manual knob on the bottom of course)
Even the top casting is the same as the solid rod style, with an extra spacer piece for the double switch setup, and a 'standard' top cover. This is why other car makes can provide useful spares.....there's a lot that is probably interchangeable.

Thanks Andy. When I get the arm from my mates "emporium" this weekend I'll attempt to assemble the pod to see if I've got a functioning motor. I hope the reason for the lump of wood was to keep the pod up for an MOT; the motor left in the boot because of the missing arm. There's definitely life in the motor when connected, here's hoping.
