Mike, whilst you're under there, you as well replace all of the petrol pipes at the back, including the large diameter one connecting the 2 tanks. If some are gone, likely that the rest will follow. The swirl pot should be used - it gives the pump a head of non-aerated fuel. Would be interesting to know why its been disconnected - leaking maybe? Replacements are available. Got mine from Richard Thorpe. Also worth using good quality hose clips, stainless preferably.

As you have a series 1 350i you probably have the rubber hoses back-front.

When I had mine I upgraded to cunifer pipe. I think you need about 7mm inner diameter, 8mm outer diameter seems commonly available. The stuff I used was lorry brake pipe so it could take a phenomenal pressure.

You put a few inches of rubber pipe on each end to join it. The big advantage is that it's practically indestructible.
