Another factor maybe to take into consideration, possible, overlooked is the new camshaft that came in the boxes of parts on purchase. It was new and possible identified as a Kent fast road cam?
Could make it a bit lumpy....

At the moment the ignition is set at 10 btdc with vacuum connected.
Dependant on fuel grade..If you are using regular 95ron then 10 is fine but if you are using 97-98ron then you want to drop it down to 9-9.5..Mine was set to about 8.5 and regular would make her pink like a good'un

Well, a good day I think.cool Set up the throttle stop screw as Andy suggested, disconnected the vacuum and "Wesley" started cold/hot and warm. I gave a bit of throttle when warm and he responded.tongue out There was a bit of popping from the intake whilst warm but I reconnected the vacuum which seemed to stop the back firing. I think the root problem has been over fueling/flooding not helped by not enough throttle while cranking. Thanks chaps we're getting there.tongue out Thanks for the pics of your fabricated air intake Zig, mine is nothing like yours. It's a large square mesh facing into the engine bay, very adjacent to the power steering pump. See pics. Again thanks for your help. Might even go to work tomorrow!eek J C.

Good stuff - just keep chipping away, and you'll get there !!

Fast road cam, depends very much on spec and particular engine, standard advice is to simply increase idle speed a bit, especially if it's not idling evenly.

The only way with timing, vac advance, is to try it on the road. A non-standard cam will change best settings too.

I spent quite a while on mine experimenting with different base timing, vac advance, and that's the only way to know what your engine likes. On the basis it's new/rebored/rebuilt it may also take a while to completely settle down.

Thanks Andy, the cam that came with the car was not positively identified as a fast road cam but on probability was. As I said in a previous post timing has been set at 10 degrees BTDC and running at present on 94 octane. The car has not been on the road yet so fully expect to have to retard the timing. It's first outing will be to the MOT garage fortunately quite near and largely down hill.laugh Tickover is surprisingly smooth. J C.
