Curious Project - 1990 TVR Tasmin 460 SE
Discussion
Looks pretty attractive to me as a long term project; but not something to try and make quick money on. If the chassis is really bad you'd have to lift the body but then you'd have a car that would be fine for many years to come. A smoking Rover V8 is not really a big issue, there's so many Rover V8s out there you could just swap it out; and as Adam says, it could be many other things rather than excessive engine wear. One of the great things about these TVRs is that they are meccano parts bin cars and pretty easy to find parts for; I can't think of anything other than accident/fire damage that would be a reason for scrapping one.
Morning all brace yourselves its going to be a long post...
Went and viewed this car yesterday and I've decided to put what will hopefully be a strong enough bid in to buy the car
Martin is about right with his summary - its not going to be a quick flip to make a few quid (tbh from a financial point if view id probably better to buy a running mot'd 400 instead but its not about that)- its a longer term project to get this wedge back on the road (hopefully not too long...)
Ok lets get the bad bits out of the way - the chassis has serious corrosion on the outriggers and the outer 6 inches of the tubes that attach to it - didn't see any holes but it cant be far off. It'll need the body lifted to be able to make a proper repair
Its been off the road for 10 years or so and all the rubber items on the car are showing it, its going to need all the hoses, fuel lines ,brake lines etc replaced along with a few seals and all the tyres which are really hard and have started to crack between the treads.
The bodywork is fairly straight a few marks but a severe case of gravel rash on the front showing it was well used when on the road - it'll need blowing over
Interior is very "musty" verneers have had it ,seats are good but have brown spots on them as if somebody has flicked a paint brush at them - carpets are good - may get away with a valet but seats may need a dye
Hood is excellent
Brakes are sticking so calipers will need a refurb
Engine starts easily, idle is lumpy, might be a lumpy cam might need a tune, no smoking on my inspection
There are photos and receipts for a few goodies inside the engine but obviously couldn't verify it during my inspection
Fuel lines will need replacing
Windscreen is just starting to delaminate at very bottom - only by a couple of mm so will be ok for a while
Looking at my post I've painted quite a dark picture but its not (these rose tinted specs help )
In short it was a good car but now needs outriggers and 10 years of non use undoing. A bit of time effort and cash should see this wedge back on the road where it belongs
Cheers
Ron

I was thinking about the TVR to save it from the scrap heap, to be honest i don't need the TVR as i have already got two of them !!!. (A 350SE and a 350 FHC that needs restoring)
Porsche wise im not too clued up on them myself, if you could just see if it starts up okay and have a quick look at the body for rust and the interior to see what condition it's in.
I'm thinking that if it's okay it could be a quick refresh up and sell to provide funds for the TVR restoration.
Thanks
Mike

Porsche is not a quick flip car
Rust along windscreen surround at bottom (scuttle) rear 3/4 offside is holed with rust all lower panels show signs os rust bubbling through. Couldn't get engine started as no battery fitted but guy informed me that it smokes
Interior at front looked good but all panels in boot area are removed and laying loose in boot
I'll upload photos later as I'm having trouble with data on my phone
Hi Ron,
Thanks for having a look at the Porsche for me,if it's that bad then i won't bother with it.
If you have bid on the TVR then i won't bid as i want to see it saved !!
I don't want to end up in a bidding war for a car that i won't have time to work on for a while.
It would be nice to see it back on the road and the FHC that i've got will certainly need the body lifting, so it would be too much for me to do., along with the other projects that i have to do. I'd be interested to see what it goes for in the end.
How did the person seem that you met down there and how does the auction thing work, is it you put a bid in and hopefully you get it ?
I'm intrigued on how there bidding system works.
Good luck in the auction
Mike

Evening all
Well the SE has sold but not to me I'm afraid.
Talked to the vendor today and although he wouldn't tell me the exact figure that it went for he did say it was "around £5000" - strong money I think considering what i know needed doing let alone any unforseen problems that may need addressing once recommissioning begins especially when you look at this http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/t...
Still I wish the new owner well and hope to see it back on the roads again
Looks like ill have to make do with the 350
Ho Hum

It certainly looks like that one. Another post here http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...Hi all
This car was posted up on ebay. Id kept an eye on It out of interest given that I'd tried to buy it before. With 10 mins left it was still down at about £3700 ! So I threw in a cheeky £5k bid thinking that it would shoot out of range in the closing minutes - well it didn't,it went for £5100 !! Bugger
Although it doesn't have a reserve I wouldn't be surprised if the seller doesn't honour the sale as its on auto trader at £12500
Gone for this car twice now and missed out both times by a whisker
Just not meant to be I guess
