Hans...Ideally if you were going to spend a fair amount of money on a car advertised then you would like to know if it has been in an accident...Has any outstanding debt owed upon it..Wether the history applied to it is completely true....However sometimes the HPI is not worth the paper it is written on as people do not always go through the correct procedures surround information relating to a car.

Its advisable if you are buying from a trader or suspect someone being a trader selling privately to pay for a HPI check, I think they are around £15.

However from what i have seen on this forum for the last 7 years people rarely get stiffed due to the knowledge known surrounding these cars by the people on here...Not that many slip through the net.

Research is a must but so is knowing the nature of these beasts and knowing what to look out for when buying one...Even so you could spend 10K on a stunning example yet still break down on the way home...As said its the nature of the beast.

There are certain individuals who i would not buy a Wedge from as their track record is very poor even with other people blowing smoke out of their backside!....

Im hoping there will be some good examples that may be for sale at this years Wedgefest..If not at least you will have made lots of new knowledgable friends and can go away with confidence in buying a Wedge that suits you....(Suits you sir )

Hi Hanns. You can get an HPI check on any vehicle from as little as £3.50 for an instant basic check using your phone or a more sophisticated check for around £20 with the AA or £15 with the RAC.

The HPI check will give you useful information about the history of the car. It will tell you if there has ever been an insurance claim, if the car is on a police stolen list, if money is owed, if it's had a color change and various other useful information.

Since HPI has been introduced, I have bought many cars and have always had an HPI check. At least a basic one. In my opinion, it is false economy not to have a check done for the sake of a few pounds especially for someone like you, who will be taking the car out of the country. Remember, if the car is on a police stolen list for example, and has been stowed away for many years, you will not be able to take the car out of the country. You could loose your money. You decide, it's your money, but if you would rather take a gamble, you will save a few pounds.

I decided to get definitie impression at bbwf, currently I'd go for series I with (evantuelly) satisfying v8, but perhaps 6 cyl is enough.

Hi Hans,

FHC owner from Belgium here ('85 350i FHC 2+2, one of six built), I'd definitely recommend a V8 model ... The sound is just fantastic and a V8 just suits this car (or any wedge for that matter) a lot better than a V6. Not too many pop up for sale, but I'd say keep an eye out and be really specific about what you want. Fairly simple technology, I spoke to a bunch of people before buying and main thing you'd be looking for is a rust-free chassis (which is a huge problem for a lot of these cars), the rest is fairly simple to fix if you're a bit skilled and can find the parts (EU-spec headlights are a nightmare but you can convert S-series lights, ECU is expensive if it's broken, ...). Not too sure about noise regulations in The Netherlands but believe these are quite strict - don't think my car would pass that test so keep dampers in mind :-)

Thank for the tips Pieter, I look at bbwf and than decide. Need Some more saving for V8 I think. There was one for sale at Kapaza but much to expensive.

There's a very 'just pulled out of a barn' looking 350 FHC on a B plate for sale at Nutley Classic cars, only £2995 but does look like it needs alot of tidying, at the very least. Its not on their website for some reason.
