Looking to buy a tablet for my dad. He's in his mid-70s, but very tech-wise. He says he's using his PC less and less (in terms of variety of uses) and would prefer something he can use while he's watching TV etc.
The answer won't be Apple.
Which means it will be either Android or Windows. Looking for something reasonably large format (10" plus?). Budget... £300ish?
Have done some research. I've seen some complaints of Windows tablets running slowly and/or having low limits on running multiple applications/windows.
One side question, sometimes I'll share a film or TV episode with him via Onedrive. At present, he downloads the file, pops it on a USB stick and plugs it into his TV. If I had an Android tablet, and got him a ChromeCast wotsit, could he flick the file from the Onedrive link to play on the TV?
I'd value opinions from peeps with first hand experience of (recent model) tablet ownership.

Kindle Fire HD?
Doesn't have the Google apps but is otherwise very similar to regular Android and plenty apps. Google themselves appear to abandoned mid range tablets as the market for them has stagnated (the Pixel C which is nice but expensive for what it is).
I believe you could stream stuff from it to a Fire TV.
Why not Apple? Honestly if you want a tablet they don't come much better even if you don't buy into the whole Apple ecosystem. As above forget Windows, totally dead on small devices so much so that Microsoft appear to be ending Surface 3 production and not bothering with consumer tablets going forward.

An extra £50 for the 10 inch version. I've got the 10 inch version and I much prefer it to my old iPad which hasn't been used since I bought this. Well worth buying the official Samsung case as that makes it a really nice device to use on your lap or arm of the chair without having to hold it.

Gotta be Android now. Microsoft have utterly fked up in mobile - not so much dropped the ball as kicked it into the next field. No customers. No developers. No future (for now).
How have they managed this, first I've heard of it but tbh, never bought into MS products anyway.ZesPak said:
Constantly changing supported devices, OS versions with big incompatibilities, ...
Some excellent stuff comes out of Microsoft but this last decade or so it's been despite, not because of, the management. In a blind rush to mimic Apple's profit margins they forgot Aesop's "The Dog and It's Reflection". Their new display tech (WPF) was allowed to fragment into four different, incompatible, versions. Then they went to ARM and back to Intel Atom and now that has been canned too. They have two app stores. A new boss has them rationalising, but each time they canned one technology they burned a bunch of developers and paying customers. Now they've settled on Win10, but that's a desktop OS and no-one has a good thing to say about in on phone or tablet that I can see.
I got my mum a Nexus 10. Clinging to my Nokia.
I got this one a few months ago:

Very happy with it but as has been said MS doesn't have many apps but that doesn't bother me.
Touch screen works well and the on screen keyboard size is great for anyone with less than 20/20 vision!
With the physical keyboard attached is great to balance on the chair arm whilst watching TV.

The Fire HD 10 will fit the bill, Google Play Store can be loaded if wanted
