For those of you with stuck on plates;

My back one fell off the other day, cleaned it up, stuck it back on and it fell off again.

Which adhesive tape/pads do you use? And how long have they stayed on?

(I might start an exciting thread one day).

I used the foam pads from the desk in Halfords when I had my plates made up. After a year I tried to take the plates off and thought I was about to snap the plate! So far had them on my current car for a year with absolutely no sign of budging.

Some I bought in Halfords... nothing special. Have been tested at well over 100mph - not on a public road, natch ;-)

Those Halfords pads are pretty good, be sure to figure out if you need the thin or thick ones.

Halfords wide number plate tape, bought some last time I changed plates & seems pretty good.

The key thing is prep the surface, something like IPA would be ideal.

i.e. 100% grease free.

I use self adhesive Velcro and it makes taking them off for when I wash/wax the cars much easier. Never had a problem on any of our cars over the years with them falling off or the Velcro becoming less 'grabby'

You just need to totally prep both surfaces, make sure it's totally flat and level and never put them on in direct sunlight as the adhesive needs a little time to grab and hold and warm sunshine prohibits this

I've recently started using the round velcro pads they do at Halfrauds, really strong stuff to start with, until your mates find out they're velcro'd and start swapping them round laugh

If they keep falling off Evo-Stik is the way to go. In other words, still use the pads but coat them and the relevant surface in adhesive.

3M VHB tape. It has a decent shelf life unlife the older foam tape stuff so you're less likely to suffer the same thing.

Usual pads that come with the plates I buy on eBay - you can buy the pads separately there for pennies

Clean the surface the use a heat gun to lightly heat the plate, apply the pads, heat again, heat the surface, stick them together, heat the plate, leave to cool

It'll not come off again without a fight.

If I remember from the thread you did about it, don't you have an E46? They have screw receptacles built into the bootlid? My rear is screwed on because it gets pretty dirty behind there so every so often it gets removed and gets a clean. The front is taped on and really is stuck on solid.

Again use the same. Also as sead need to be clean and wax free. Also takes a few days for glue to go off so best if you are not driving for a few days.

I just bought some generic foam pads from eBay, £1 delivered to the door!
Cleanliness is the key IMHO, I use brake cleaner or a similar solvent, forget waxing under the plates, who's going to see that bit?
One tip I found is to put masking tape around the old plate (assuming you're happy with the position) as a guide. Then you can offer up the plate and stick it on in one go. Never had a problem with sticky pads and they look soooo much better than those silly screws and plastic caps. yes
