Can anybody give me any extra info on the turbo for this engine, specificly is it water cooled and will the water pump continue for a while after the ignition is turned off?

I've never had a turbo petrol before and whilst I try not to rag it within a few miles of shut off it would be nice to know if the car had this feature.

Some online threads seem to suggest everything from dont worry about it and turn it off red hot to you must sit at idle for 2 mins even after a gentle cruise.

why worry, modern turbos are pretty robust and would be covered by warranty. it will be oil cooled and I would say water cooling would be over kill.

You need turbo timers when you start getting into 250+ bhp sports cars bot 150.

I've had one for 36k miles & can't answer your specific query but am interested in the answer. Perhaps the compromise is just to drive sedately towards the end letting it cool down. It's also what I do in NASP cars too.

I'm not worried and I don't (generally) rag it before shutting down, however at a few climbing spots and on route to work there are some really fun roads....
If its been driven hard ill make an effort to really cruise the last at least half mile and let it idle a little.
Likewise I'm gentle before its warm and always check the oil temp rather than coolant before properly giving it some.

I'm well aware its far from a performance car, I'm asking more out of curiosity than anytbing really, I'm very intrested in how everything works and theres a frustrating lack on information available for this car (2016 1.4 Leon FR)

I think one of the things is that certainly on the Golf there are very few of them around. The engine was only available in the expensive GT pack, and of course most people have chosen the diesel, or if going for petrol the cheaper regular 1.4.

Agreed it's not a performance car but I think the performance is superb for such a small engine (& I also drive a car with 285bhp), though it amuses me how if you use the performance the MPG is totally destroyed! But it's great to have the choice of both for a daily, and reasonable BiK for a co. car.

Is yours manual or DSG? How do you find the lag issue when in particular pulling away, I consider it by fr the worst aspect of the engine, almost dangerous! Mine's being serviced next week and I'll get them to look at it but as ever get some c*ck and bull story about it being fine!

I have got the manual.

I find it perfect pulling away either slow or fast but if you try to get off the line somewhere inbetween the two it can bog down just as you get rolling.

I had initially assumed it was just me getting used to the car but there is deffinatly a bit of an issue even if it ahounds like its effecting you much more than it is me.

I'll mention it when I take it in for a service, along with the rattling door cards, other than that I love the car, it's quick enough for B road blasting and on motorways / my commute can see 50mpg which is much more than I was expecting.

Overall average for the last 3500 miles is 44mpg(calculated) and 45/46mpg on the trip computer which is better than my diesel astra GTC and pretty amazing considering I deffinatly do not drive the car slow!

I've never really worked out if it's the DSG or turbo lag - first petrol turbo I've had, always had NASP petrols or a couple of TD's.

Agreed it seems to be as you're rolling into say a roundabout, see a gap and get back on the gas & it bogs down. It does annoy a bit, but it's so nice to be back in a petrol as a daily and not really pay any penalty fuel wise - I'm doing circa 25k pa, incl half for work, so far in the past 36k miles I'm getting 47mpg via a spreadsheet, but the combo of my commute and general driving does lend itself to this. As you say though it can be good fun when going for a blast too.

I didn't realise 'til this thread that the engine was in anything other than the Golf & A3, great to see it in the Leon too.

This engine is in my Golf GTE too - it's definitely a water (well, glycol) cooled turbo, running off the same circuit as the cylinder head and charge cooler. It has its own electric water pump for this so don't worry about turning it off after ragging it, the engine will look after itself.

Can't comment on the lag as the GTE uses the electric motor to pull away which if anything is too torquey, wet manhole covers make the TCS light flash even with a tiny amount of throttle applied.
