What's a 'rev limiter'

I take it from that to mean maybe no then!
Also I ment to say fitted as standard.
I do know of a certain 1992 430SE that has one fitted (might be factory fitment?) and I wondered if this was on later models.
Cheers

Yes, later models only when they lost some of the purity of thought; about 89/90 IIRC.

I have had a rev limiter fitted to my 390 since I got it - thank the stars.
One of the first purchases I made was some after-market carpets. Going into a roundabout one day the throttle pedal got stuck under the front edge of the carpet. Thousands of revs and couldn't turn it off because I needed to steer. Fortunately the rev-limiter saved the pistons/valves from meeting.
I sent the carpets back the next day.

Of course it can be easily disconnected for track-days.

Curiously, the Haynes Capri 2.8i book indicates that a rev-limiter is fitted to the rotor arm on that engine,
but on my 280i there appears to be no such facility.

I have an 'RL-8 VisiScale' adjustable limiter fitted to my 390. The previous owner had it fitted, cost about £80 IIRC. It can be adjusted between about 4500 and 7000 rpm.... though even 4500 from a V8 in this weather would be more than enough to get out of shape!
I usually have it set around 6000 or so; it was at 6500 when I got the car, maybe that contributed to the broken piston rings....

I understood all ECU's fitted to RV8's had a rev limiter function.

Factory set although can be adjusted by the likes of Mark Adams. I assume it cuts injectors / fuel pump when it detects the limit which is set around 6500.

Course I could be completely wrong again and whilst I have seen around that rpm on occasion I'm not going out to see what happens if I don't change up !

You must mean mine. obviously I haven't approached those revs as I wasn't aware there was a rev limiter. I probably wouldn't know what it looks like in any case. I still have lots to learn about the car. Roll on BBWF

The rev limiters are set at about 6000. No real problem since both power and torque are falling off. Superb car BTW.

Most Wedges were built when TVR believed that the driver should have full control (and responsibility) for the car and that means no rev limiter. I have one friend with a black 350 who blew his engine up twice at 7,750. By co-incidence another friend did the same twice trick with a 400SE because of the carpet problem mentioned above (factory fitment carpets.) It's all more work for HHC. Those that use RT racing can obtain fuller details about all four events whilst there.

Standard Rover V8 has a 'sort of' rev-limiter, just a bit of protection due to the hydraulic cam followers 'pumping-up' and keeping the valves slightly open. Power drops dramatical due to this, but can't be relied on as over-revving is still possible.
Never tested it my self, and do not intend to either.

On the 200 series I believe its the floor that limits the revs

On a 400SE it's the wife!

That's the whine limiter, or is that customs and excise?

Humm. I was told by a couple of the factory owners that mine "reved more freely than any other 390SE" ... I haven't experienced a rev limiter cutting in - other than my developed-over-time self-preservation device - Streaky

but do not mis-interpret that to mean rev higher.

Thread resurrection! I had this carpet problem on Sunday. Car revved way up but seemed to have a limiter. I turned the key after what must have been 1-2 seconds and coasted to a dignified halt. It seems to be fine, but didn't half make a bloody racket!

One day a few of us were driving out and the guy in front of me banged into a van as we came to a stop..It wasn't at any real speed although it cracked his bumper..The piece of trim under the dash that covers the heater pipes fell down and he couldn't brake..Good job it happened at slow speed!...
