Having removed the trans tunnel cover for another job it was very clear that the rubber gear gaiter below the leather item was in need of replacement. Easy enough to do other than the original gaiter (a Ford item fitted to Sierra's and other models) is long since been obsolete. The same gaiter is used on the S so I had to use some alternative thinking when I replaced it on my S.

I had already tried this - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/universal-rubber-gear-st... - and it just simply doesn't fit and wouldn't work.

So I returned back my previous solution for the S. This involved using a rubber gaiter from the mk1 LR Freelander.

So unpackaged and inverted I checked to see if it would fit and what mods maybe required. Note the photo shows the orientation I fitted it. High bit of what was the top fitted to the rear of the car.

It fitted fine. The small hole even fitting neatly round the nulon gearstick bush.

The only modification needed is to trim off the bottom lip.

Fixed it in place with 6 screws.

Slight kick up in one corner but this and the hole for the reversing light wires was plugged using ali foil tape.

All back together.

THIS is another option, and dirt cheap. I haven't tried to fit it yet but it looks do-able.

Interesting idea sticking it in upside down - maybe there will be less wear.
