Crying shame - looking at the interior and exterior it does look as if it needs a full rebuild. Just hope the chassis is not too bad.

Hi Dave

I think it would take more than £7k, unless you can do most of the work your self, but the car would be worth it when its done.
New interior £3 to 4k (Including new hood) New veneers £650, repaint £2 to 4k. The engine compartment looks like its had a small fire round the AFM, and the chassis may need repairs so that may be another £4 to 5k if you do it commercially.
They only made 242 400SE and how many are left? Doing a car like this is a labour of love, if you are worried how much its going to cost to restore it then it would not be a car for that person, its needs some body who wants to save it no matter how much it cost's. Sounds silly but that's what it takes when you take on a project like this car. But it could be done, and has been done before.

I was looking to buy a early vixen or grantura about 7 years back. Restoration projects were around this price and upwards, in fact they were going up in price when I was reading the ads! Or so it felt. Look at the price of them now for a project, if you can find one that is. Maybe wedges are about to head the same way.

yes I know what you mean. I paid £5k in 2010 for a Vixen project and in fact I haven't seen another since!

Hi ASTACUS, I remember the car you bought well. I av=ctually looked at it and had arranged to buy it at the time but when i rang to arrange deposit on it the vendor told me he had been made a better offer and tried to get us into a bidding war, i eventually thought not very professional of him so pulled away.
I used to still visit the classic section and followed your progress for a while before going back to my first love in TVR's, the wedge.
How is it going, are you on the road?

Ah, interesting, thats not quite the story he told me. he said I'd missed it by about a day, then rang me back about a week later saying youd dropped out.

Anyway, yes. the car and most of the bits were in a very bad state when I got down to it. Ive had to rebuild/replace/recondition just about every single part so far, from the suspension to the radiator and everything in between. The sensible man would have moved it on to be honest, but I am not very sensible when it comes to old cars!

Ive been held up for a long time because of issues with the new chassis being made wrong. Very hard to work out which bits were right and which not, till I got it up to Duncan Ruben in Redditch who has a jig for the chassis and he figured it all out. In the mean time I have rebuilt the engine gearbox diff etc so I should have a rolling chassis with a running engine within a few weeks of getting it back. You will hear the cheer from where ever you are in the UK when that happens!

Hmmm, confused I definitely told him i dropped out but only after i had upped my offer once, then he came back again saying he had another increased offer from the other party (presume yourself). Anyway sounds like it needed someone with a little more patience than me. It would be good to see it finished when you get there because it was in a state and a very rare model.
Suppose i had better say good luck with the rest of build and move on as folk will get confused, after all we are on the wdge pages smile I'll look out for your updates in the classic section.
