Hi Peeps

The engine has developed a ticking noise which sounds like a tappet ...I just hope its not cam related...Any ideas?

Thanks

Could just be a pin-hole in the exhaust manifold, a leaking exhaust gasket or loose manifold bolt. See thread from last week. Hopefully nothing serious.

I haven't listened to it yet but can you tell if it's from.a particular bank? Not unknown for the odd rocker pad to wear / detach. Whipping the rocker covers off will give you some idea.

Usually when the cam wears it gets quieter because the lobe is reducing.

Try a long screwdriver with the handle on your ear and use as a stethoscope to narrow down the location.

Thanks chaps...Getting a bit worried as I have been watching a lot of videos that are almost identical to mine and all of them were a slipped liner...Especially as the noise is the same speed as the pistons...It is more noticeable when up to temp and does start running a bit lumpy.

It is also quite common on the older disco engines..Numbers 5 & 7 on the left bank and 4 & 6 on the right are the main culprits...Mine does sound like 4 or 6....Unfortunately if this is the case then its bye bye TVR journey....frown

Just been advised that its normally the 3.9 upwards...Im hoping its a loose spark plug...Could I be that lucky????...Ill have a look when the cover thaws out, I could take it off and sit it next to it and people would think I have another one...smile

What a bloody result...No.6 plug was leaking as it wasn't tight enough...The socket that I have is very tight in there and wasn't getting a good fit on it...Good job I kept the old cheap plug spanner.

I think next time I order the iridium plugs I will order the smaller socket type...Didn't realise there were two different sizes...

Happy days are here again....beer

Just spares that are not needed..

Save them for later.

biggrin

Glad it was just a loose plug - I have shaved my plug sockets so they fit.

Also - my heads use 16mm plugs and not the std 22mm.
