Young Wedge Insurance
Discussion
Hi all
Considering getting a 350i or 390se as a rolling restoration. However the threat of stupid insurance is proving extremely prohibitive as I'm only 18. Are there any young wedge owners out there who know whether it's possible to get reasonable insurance through anyone?
Thanks
James

Surely "off road" insurance - for the year or two you'll be working on it - would only be a hundred quid or less?
Then you time your real insurance to your nearest birthday (e.g. if 19 and 3/4 wait till you're 20) to get a lower quote. Plus - you get a great birthday present to yourself from yourself!

Hi James. My boy didn't get insured on my 400SE until he was 24. We had been searching high and low for an insurance company to cover him since he was 18. All the quotes he received before the age of 24 were astronomical. It also depends on where you live as some areas especially in or around London are in a high risk bracket. It's worth trying companies like Elephant or Admiral but they will only cover as a multi car policy, so you would need several vehicles to insure with them, and even so at 18 the quotes will be way above a grand depending on where you live. Until you reach 24/25 it's going to be difficult or costly or both. However, never say never. Keep trying and good luck.

Thanks all for the help!
It would be a second car - No commuting to worry about and fortunately living in Sheffield so I don't think it's too bad geographically?
Sure my Dad wouldn't mind driving a V8 again, he sold his Chimaera the best part of 10 years ago and I think he misses the sound...
Is there much between the 350 and 390? I prefer the looks of the 390 but will it be much different to insure? I've read a few things about MSM?
Cheers

I've got both a 350i and 390Se and there was no difference on the insurance. I've now got them on a joint policy through Footman James. Garaged, agreed value and limited to 3000 miles per year each. £130 total lnsurance. One of the few benefits of being the wrong side of 50. Now where did I leave my zimmer frame? Cheers.
I may have been lucky but I managed to insure a 4 litre Chim for ~£600 with Admiral with multicar and 'classic car' discount at age 20 and 2 years NCB (though one non fault claim which still hiked the price- humph), an exotic provider may not be the answer once you take multicar etc. into account.
Before I sold my 400SE, I was insured through Admiral with a classic car discount and agreed valuation of £14,000. I was 20 (now 21) and the insurance was reasonable. Less than £1000 (can't remember the exact figure) I actually found it cheaper when first looking to insure a 400 over a 350!
As a footnote especially if you're looking towards Admiral OP, I have previously heard less than complimentary opinions of their coverage regarding classic/unique cars (which being built of plastic would probably include ours).
On a small scale my experience echoes this as when making a windscreen replacement claim they refused to allow a specialist to carry out the work and would only refer me to Autoglass- all dealt with pleasantly and within the agreed £75 windscreen excess, but it did mean two bites of the cherry for them to find and fit the right stock, with a long period in between- all the while the car laid up with no screen. No more than a inconvenience, and the end result was still exactly what it said on the tin so fair enough.
But what it does suggest is that they're unlikely to fork out for specialists so make sure to get that agreed valuation somewhere you're happy with- hopefully you won't ever need it but in the event of a prang you should be prepared for P&J not to return. As soon as my car returns from major works I'll be on the blower as the more I think about it the more I realise how devastated I'd be to lose beastie and only receive my current agreed valuation (the sum I bought the car for) in return, as I know that especially with the work I've done the car is worth so much more to me!
Who knows, maybe I'm being paranoid- but anyway, in terms of the amount you pay for coverage, once discounts are included, Admiral seem like a good shout. Good luck and I hope you get a result!
