Sometimes I can get it up, but sometimes I can only manage a semi:

Swapping relays over doesn't change anything, so both must be OK. Fuses OK.

So- maybe a sticky motor? Problem with this is my access hole (no sniggering at the back) seems to be non-existent.

Could be a dirty connection...Or just a bit loose...smile

Have you done any work near wires or fuse board?....Could also be the diode....

Not been doing anything really. Diode is brand new.
It's just odd that it sometimes works and sometimes nothing.
Ever heard of a wedge with no access hole for the lights? Looks like I'll have to take the bonnet off to try to access them from beside the radiator

Can you wind them up by hand from underneath?

Is the lens sticking or catching slightly on the edge of the pod? Give it a little pull and see if you can get it up that way wink

Failing that, try this.

  • With engine running, switch lights on (pods up position).
  • Disconnect negative battery terminal (with engine running).
  • Switch lights off.
  • Turn ignition off.
  • Reconnect battery.
  • Start engine .
  • Switch lights on.
Sounds mad I know but it works on mine. If it doesn't try a few different variations on switch position when you disconnect the battery and see what happens. It's all to do with the position the lifter was in when the power is cit off so if your lens is getting stuck the poor little things has got confused.

Do not under any circumstances disconnect the battery with the engine running, the diodes in the alternator could blow, many bulbs and other electrical goodies could blow

Leaving the ignition on will have the effect you require, then engine doesn't need to run (or you can stop it, then put ignition straight back on).

Mines doesnt have an access hole either General.
Mines is a 1982 v6. Somebody has cut a rough hole in the bay to allow very linited access.

As I understand it the FHC doesn't have an access hole underneath....Try tapping all the relays with the handle of a screwdriver, They can stick.....

Some of (well - a LOT) of the problem with these pop-up units, is the limit switches in the motors.
They're horrid, riveted, brass strips. Barely fit for purpose - sadly!

Mine has an access hole too.

But remember to pull the battery terminals off if you're sticking you fingers anywhere near the mechanism.
