Well after a complete overhaul of the front end I can finally report that all is well with the steering. Having taken the car for an alignment check it was found that the Caster and Toe was out by a couple of degrees on both sides. A final tightening of the lower steering UJ sorted out a bit of play once the car was back for having its degrees sorted. I think the biggest impact from doing all that work was changing the bushes on both upper and lower wishbones and tie bars which turned out to be a very simple and straight forward job IMO and well with the effort if you get the chance to do it.

I was going to change the tyres as part of the process but will wait until this season is over. I still don't know which the size to go for as there is a difference of opinion but that can wait. Just some detailing/touch ups on the bodywork and that will finish things off nicely.

Thanks to all those who posted their thoughts on what may have been wrong in the first place.

There is no better feeling that knowing what you do with the steering wheel the front of the car responds too and knowing it's all you own work.

Ive got a garage local to me with a geo ramp and its great to have the car checked out every few months.
