Still not happy with the 390SE handling despite a clean MOT with no advisories, so pulled the front off side suspension apart last night and found the top wishbone bushes are buggered. Fortunately have a new set in stock so stripped old bushes out of wishbone, cleaned, primed and now painted gloss black. New bushes being fitted tomorrow night, then I'm going to do the same for the near side. Also checked out the Racing Red front shocks. One was fine but the other's adjuster just spins without actually stiffening or softening the shock so a new set of Avo's ordered today. Also thought while I'm at it I'd refurb the calipers and fit new grooved vented discs so a new set also order today. Hoping to have it all back together before the 18th (TVR Sprint meeting at Shelsley Walsh). Also chased Mark Adams today re the ECU reset and Jag AFM inspection - he confirmed should be done in the next week so then it's time for the rolling road to see what my John Eales 3.9 actually produces. Getting excited now.

Lad was off school sick so offered to take a half day. He watched TV while I worked on the 390.

Top wishbone bushes fitted and wishbone refitted to car. New AVO shocks fitted both sides. Sticking brake caliper stripped, cleaned, two coats of red caliper paint. I'll fit seals and refit on Saturday together with new grooved discs and EBC Greenstuff pads. Both front hubs removed, ready for new discs coming tomorrow. And while I was checking things out found the front near side track rod end gaiter had split so removed old one and new one due tomorrow from TVR Parts.

But the big question is - how the bloody hell do you get the old brake disc and hub unit separated? I've tried the WD40, big hammer and heat but so far no movement. Any top tips??? Thanks

Soak it overnight in Plusgas or other penetrative oil - WD40 doesn't really do the trick on the really stuck stuff. If that doesn't work then...

Assuming you have no puller (as you would have used it already!), then you can always use a cutting disc to slit the brake disc (being careful not to cut into the hub) and drive a wedge in there to part it - you're not keeping the discs after all... Last resort stuff, but had to do this on a bearing journal fused onto a stub axle in the past.

24 hours of soaking in penetration oil and one very big fk off hammer and both hubs and discs now separated, ready for refitting with very smart grooved discs tomorrow.

390 back up and running and new brakes are superb - running grooved discs with EBC Greenstuff pads and they are awesome. but rather easy to now lock the front wheels. New bushes on the suspension have stopped the squeaks and handling is much improved. Well pleased.

Tomorrow I'm making up a new bracket to fit the modified and re-calibrated Jag AFM to the 390SE and also fit the Tornado modified ECU that I picked up from Mark Adams on Tuesday evening. I'm somewhat excited to see how the old girl goes.....

Hi Keith, did you go for an adjustable ecu or a modified but fixed version out of interest

Hi Glen, I've got a modified/fixed version. I managed to track down a previously Tornado modified unit which was on a 390SE. It only took Mark 15 minutes to reset it to suit the current engine with standard injectors and Jag AFM.

Doing the nearside outer driveshaft UJ.

Got the old one off, so far. Just need to clean up the 'oles where the bearing cups go in, reassemble and grease.

Well overall it tool about 4 hours, a bit longer than expected but I had issues with one of the holes being a bit tight and needed some mild abrasion before the cup would go in without extreme persuasion, I used one of the old ones to make sure it would fit.

Just popped the battery on charge as the car stereo was not fully off and run the battery down.

Next task is to start putting a basic fuel map on the car and try and get the raging tickover under control as its very high.

Well if Friday night counts as the weekend then my work is done. Wedge is at the mechanics for finishing off prior to being road registered after 10 years. SO I gave the garage a good cleanup...

Zig, see that pile of brown carpet on the bottom shelf of the trolley on the left? They're yours.
