Just about to start Hammeriting chassis for winter, after spending some time underneath it all seems accessible apart from the sill area(both sides). Advice seems to be to drill out rivets to get access, does anybody know a less destructive approach?

I think you will have to take the sills off to do a proper job. It's not that difficult mine had rivets alond the top edge and self tapers underneath.

Try using POR15 instead of Hammerite (which tends to fall off!)

Get the drill out, it's quite painless You can either put it back on with self tappers or a cheapo rivet gun is only around 15 squids. It's worthwhile removing it so you can have a proper look.

Also, they gather a lot of mud/crud/salt in the sills and it's well worth removing it so the outriggers are less encouraged to corrode!

Hope you don't get any nasty surprises with the outriggers, mine weren't well but only a moderate pain in the ar$e to change!

Depending on the approach (and the size of rivet), either a 3mm to drill through the rivet or something like a 10mm to drill the head off. Either works but I prefer the first approach with a small drill as it's neater. Big drill bit can leave marks around the rivet.

Have a look at www.dave-chaplin.co.uk/ and follow the obvious link to my Wedge to see what you might find behind there! The side shown was the best of the two

When I drilled the rivets out of mine and pulled the sill panel down, a couple of lengths of chassis tube fell out. But don't panic - these tubes can be replaced without taking the body off. Tower View in N London did mine for a very reasonable price.

when i took the sills off my car the bolts inside the front wing and behind the seats were very badly rusted and when i tried to undo them the nut fell into pieces, you may not have this problem. ( i hope not ) but you may find a drimmell or equivalent usefull to get to them, to cut them off ( that seemed to be the only way i could remove them ) someone else may help you with other ideas
