Having finally worked up the enthusiasm to drop the propshaft again on my 400se to send it off for a balance check (I've been suffering a mystery vibration for a while now - changed d/s and prop. u/j's, wheel bearings ok etc.), I removed the four bolts from the diff flange only to see about half an eggcup of oil drip out. The large nut seems tight enough, and I don't really want to give it a tweak as I believe it sets the pinion pre-load via a crush washer. Anyone any idea why the oil should have leaked out, by the looks of things along the pinion shaft?

The pinion seal will leak eventually. If the car is used in anger a combination of hard work on the diff gears & LSD and the brakes can warm the diff which'll accelerate the wear. It can be changed in situe (so I'm told but it's a PItheA). Best thing is to drop the diff and get it to Bernie to rebuild.
