It made me think the other day when driving out of my town Ellon, that modern car performance really hasnt come on that far.
A local chap in a flasy new Clio V6 wasnt really getting much ahead of my 350i. A car made back in 87 really put the spooks up that clio. Makes me think that you would need a hell of a car to out class a 420 450. Just a thought

Something also tells me that the mega-high-revving Clio's engine will be on the scrapheap long before the lazy TVR V8's will though. Also flooring both cars in 5th will probably result in the striking Wedge using its torque to surge ahead too. Will stand corrected if anyone else knows better.

Whizzo Chaps!

Well, I hate to spoil your fun! Lots of modern cars are just soooo good these days..........

.......but, for sheer out and out power on a power to weight ratio basis a good Wedge will probably outdrag any hot hatch, modern performance car, maybe even beat a Jag XKR(?) especially if it is a 400 or +..........

.......but on a straight smooth road!

On bumpy roads and bumpy bends the moderns have it. This is why I am currently considering completely resuspending my car...........

.........but I normally like my cars to be original - but it does have new paint job, new interior, new hood blah blah blah - what should I do? Probably keep it original mechanically - that's what you will say!

Hate to agree with JJ but the 400 seemed to struggle to loose a SEAT Ibiza Cupra of all things going up the M4 - ok so was just accelerating in 5th and he was probably gunning it (you'd hope anyway) but was expecting better.. then again it could be the extra weight the car's carrying - ie me

6 pints or 2 litres in the portable tank..

Never let the 400 low enough to tell what the max is - normally end up getting 20 quid of Optimax which is when the fuel gauge needle has stopped bouncing.

Hang on a bit chaps!

Your'e getting me all confused now. What is the tank capacity of a Wedge then? The handbook I've got (which is for a 400SE (the original was borrowed and never returned) says 60 odd litres I think. I can never get more than about 32 litres in mine! I am wondering whether it has been fitted with a small tank? I don't fancy finding out really what the capacity is by running out cos I don't want to drag a load of gunge into the injectors - any ideas?

I've totally brimmed my 400se from empty (ran out!) with not much more than 50 litres. My handbook also says capacity 60 litres, so maybe the last 10 or so cannot be accessed or cannot be put in. Either way, I work on the assumption that 200 miles is about my limit for range - rising to 250 on a gentle long motorway type run.
