Yep, I've just re-drawn the lighting control circuit from that full drawing above so I could follow it more clearly: to stop the pods lifting on sidelights you need to take a look at the back of the main lights switch. You should have a brown, a red, a black, a brown/black and a blue, with a diode connected across the brown/black and blue (might be obvious, might be taped into the loom somewhere, either way it doesn't matter 'cos we're ignoring it biggrin).
You just need to cut the brown/black where it goes into the switch (and tape up the cut ends, obviously).
If the wire colours are NOT as described then your car is probably not as per the diagram shown and will need a rethink.

If you wanted to keep things tidy you could refit the Dim/Dip module but remove fuse 16, so the unit would have no supply and wouldn't try to light the dipped beams.

Am I missing the point or is my car a complete anomaly?
The light switch has two positions.....
1. Side lights on with the pods down (no headlights on)
2. Pods up both head and sides on
Believe the car is as it came from the factory, never had any wires snipped etc.
Mines a 1988 series 2 and operates the same. Side lights work with pods down and they only pop up when switch is in second position. They do not pop up if you try flashing them with light switch in the off position so I use the driving lamps for that.

Thanks. How do I get the switch out.....? Or can I access the wires elsewhere?

If your switch is on the steering cowling then simply undo the two screws underneath...Might be easier if you have an adjuster on the steering column to drop it down first...Ziga

No, it's in the dash:

Second switch from left, at the bottom.

(not my actually dash, but pretty much the same as, except my lights is second from left and fog third but in the photo they are the other way around).

As far as I know the switches can just be prised out, however if you have the fibre optic lighting then the plastic clip will probably come off the back of the switch so maybe not the way to go about it!
Does the 400SE switch panel come off by first removing the stereo then wedging a hand inside to remove two nuts...? Been years since I worked on one...

Nope. I can't work out how to get to the back of the switch or how to trace where this wire actually is.

Such a simple job, simply snip one wire but I'm buggered if I can find it. If you do, please let me know where it is lurking.

By the end of the month I should have the body shell back on and can get to the rats nest (It's jammed up against the garden fence at the minute) and as I need to wire in my wideband I will have to drop the fuse panel, I will take a photo for you at that point.

Nope, just taken a look at mine, main light switch on the steering column.

Only 3 wires running to the back of the switch; Brown, Blue and a Red & Green, guess its back to the drawing board for me as well.

So SD1 column then. In which case the control diodes should be around the relay panel somewhere (usually to the right or bottom right of it)...

Right so while I was on my back with me head stuck in the passenger footwell I confirmed that the offending wire is Brown / Black.

The Brown / Black goes from the back of the diode to the pod control relay and then into the loom so at the back of the relay you have two Brown / Black wires going into the same terminal - Cut wire that disappears into the loom leaving only the connection to the diode.
