2. Gear box leak, at gear shift end
3. Power steering slight leak
4. Diff leaks, in 2 places apparently
5. Slight leak on brake master cylinder
6. Speedo cable plastic melted
7. All bushes need replacing
8. N/s front wheel bearing play
9. N/s door dropped, runner inside rusted away
10. O/s door dropped, motor not working
11. N/s track control arm play
12. O/s spotlight cracked, silver backing rusting.
13. Rear discs worn
14. Small hole in hood
15. Slight damage to corner on top of roof
16. Bent (torsion??? or something) bar at rear
17. Bonnet sound proofing needs re-sticking
18. Radiator leaking..re-core
19. Boot gas struts knackered

Not sure what to think? I suppose it's better than hearing "motors knackered mate" or worse!!
Can i ask the all knowing forum what you think. I have a reasonable budget, but would like to know what you guys estimate as to cost?
Peninsular are phoning back with a rough costing in a couple of days.
(Roof aint a major issue for me though)

Cheers

I would run thru each of them in turn with Peninsular..

1 rocker covers leaking - cheap to fix and quick.

etc..

I try to fix them things that involve safety (brakes) and will keep me on the road (reliability) ..

Cheers Alan, i'm not bothered about the roof as it really isnt that bad..coat of Renovo should improve things, same goes for the spotlight and maybe even the boot struts can wait.
As for cost..and bearing in mind i'm still new to TVR and associated costs, would around £5000 cover the list? I have done the chassis myself (which i might add they said was quite a good job) and i supplied a brand new JP SS exhaust.
Cheers,

Good w/e

I'm not a DIY'er but I think you list looks worse than it will cost as many of the issues are minor. I really hope you're budget leaves you quids in, best of luck!

1. Slight rocker cover leaks (both)

USUALLY CHEAP. 50 QUID TOPS

2. Gear box leak, at gear shift end

DEPENDS IF THE BOX HAS TO COME OUT TO FIX IT. IF IT DOES, THEN IT'S USUALLY ENGINE OUT TOO, AND THEN YOU ARE LOOKING AT SEVERAL HUNDREDS, + THE COST OF THE BOX REPAIR - IF IT DOES HAVE TO COME OUT IT'S BEST TO GET IT RECONNED AT THE SAME TIME - ABOUT 250QUID,AND THEN REPLACE THE CLUTCH TOO!!

3. Power steering slight leak

WHERE FROM? PUMP IS ABOUT 120 QUID. RACKS A BIT MORE I THINK, FITTING IS NOT TOO HARD THOUGH

4. Diff leaks, in 2 places apparently

IF ITS A BAD LEAK THEN IT'S DIFF OUT. BUDGET A FEW HUNDRED HERE TOO.

5. Slight leak on brake master cylinder

REAPIR KIT OR REPLACE. NOT SURE OF COST

6. Speedo cable plastic melted

20 QUIDS WORTH!

7. All bushes need replacing

400 QUID + PROBABLY, INCLUDING ALIGNMENTS ETC

8. N/s front wheel bearing play

NOT ALOT. 20 QUID FOR THE BITS + FITTING

9. N/s door dropped, runner inside rusted away

DUNNO

10. O/s door dropped, motor not working

YOU HAVE MOTORISED DOORS! :HEHE: MUST HAVE BEEN AN OPTION!

11. N/s track control arm play

DEPENDS. DO YOU MEAN TRACK ROD? IF SO, IT DEPENDS ID THE PLAY IS IN THE ROD OR THE RACK. ONE IS 20 QUID THE OTHER ISN'T!

12. O/s spotlight cracked, silver backing rusting.

20 QUID

13. Rear discs worn

NOT SURE. EASY TO DO THOUGH.

14. Small hole in hood

GET WET! :HEHE:

15. Slight damage to corner on top of roof

GET WETTER!

16. Bent (torsion??? or something) bar at rear

DON'T KNOW, BUT COULD BE EXPENSIVE?

17. Bonnet sound proofing needs re-sticking

TUBA GLUE!

18. Radiator leaking..re-core

150 - 200 QUID

19. Boot gas struts knackered

30 QUID EACH

Not sure what to think? I suppose it's better than hearing "motors knackered mate" or worse!!

ALL IN ALL IT DOESN'T SOUND too bad really. Worth a rattle I'd say at about 1200 - 2500 depending on the gearbox and steering questions. You can do alot of this stuff yourself too.

I would add - for some of the big jobs like a leaking gearbox or diff - how bad is it .. if it's just a weep - then leave it and make sure they are topped up at each service.

Well at least you now know everything that needs doing, which is good, im sure you can do a few of the easy ones yourself i would not bother with 6, 12,14,15,17 and 19 at the moment. Get the brakes and important mechanical bits sorted out along with the bushes.

Parts shouldn't be too bad but the labour might be another thing

cheers

Wayne, First you need to go out and get drunk!!
Seriously, ask yourself - is this the Wedge you want to keep for a long time? Will you be wanting to improve the performance, if not now, later? Is this your every day car or your pride and joy for hi-days and holidays?
My reasoning for this aproach is that you paid £5000 for it and you are prepared to pay another £5000! If you sell it now its still worth £5000. Believe me (cos I know) you can buy a whole lot of Wedge for £10000.
Myself and many others on this site have been down this road and I for one have come to the conclusion that the cheapest upgrade is to buy THE BIGGEST BADDEST WEDGE you can.
Dont get me wrong I have spent thousands on my 350 and i still LOVE her and will keep hold of her for as long as I can (still hopeing the Wife will take it on)
If you have even the slightest thoughts towards more power then spend the ABSOLUTE minimum on yours, sell it, and get a bigger one in good nick.
Good luck and happy Wedgeing.

PS. I have heard a lot lately about people having to wait ages to get their Wedges back from the more reputable garages. Why are they so slow? How come you have to wait a couple of days for a quote even?

Thanks for all your replys folks. Richard, you hit the nail on the head with that one!! Before i bought the wedge the intention was to buy a 400se, typical of me ..couldn't wait!! Impatient, starry eyed. So ended up with the 350i, no bad thing fantastic car. Trouble is i only drove it for a month before it started going t*ts up,then i realized how many little things needed doing. (sigh)It's not a bad car at all though, even the guy who collected it from Peninsulars remarked how clean it looked. Anyway blah blah.
What to do? Peninsular said they would phone Tuesday with a costing...so i have options. It's funny i almost have enough to buy blaines 390 now!!!!! I guess i could do the minimum required for the MOT, and sell her + with cash get a BiggerBadderWedge????????
Are we all like this, us wedge owners??
Right now i just want to drive a wedge, any wedge..!
The worst that can happen i suppose is i stay with the 350i, at least i will know that things will have been sorted on her. And i spilt blood+tears on that chassis.
Ok chaps, thanks for the advice again.

Cheers,
Wayne.
anyone want to swap a 350i + £5000 for a BBW?

Still dont understand why it takes so long JUST to get a quote! Yes I know supply and demand etc. But come on in this day and age "just in time" etc.If it takes days to get a price how long does it take to do the work!!??

Sounds to me like "Big Col" did the survey , and believe me he is VERY THOROUGH ! However , the way I have always worked with the Peninsula guys , is to prioritise things . Richard will not let anything safety related go , but will give you an honest opinion of how long things will last , before they become an issue . So don't panic !!!
.......... and Richard , WHEN DO WE GET MRS,H'S 400 BACK ?

Aint got a clue cos am new too.

But 3 weeks trawling suggests:
there's time served rover/jag/ford garages that can do marque-specific jobs
if you are budgetted for +£60 per hour inc vat and know how long job will take for labour, let 'em do it
if you are happy with Peninsula prices let 'em do the lot
or if you are happy with prices for parts as quoted and can do jobs yourself, go for it

Me, I aint got £60 inc vat,so I keep trawling

My opinion

1. Slight rocker cover leaks (both)
- Does it still leak if you torque it up? if only minor, then just clean the engine every now & then

2. Gear box leak, at gear shift end - if not too bad the put some Wynnes transmission leak seal in.

3. Power steering slight leak _? how bad is it?

4. Diff leaks, in 2 places apparently _ again try wynnes transmission leak seal

5. Slight leak on brake master cylinder _ get a kit to fix

6. Speedo cable plastic melted _ does it still work? if so leave it

7. All bushes need replacing - peninsular did all mine, Pay the money & get them to do it.Well worth it.

8. N/s front wheel bearing play _ clean out the bearing, re pack with fresh grease. Torque up to 27ftlbs, then back off a flat.

9. N/s door dropped, runner inside rusted away

10. O/s door dropped, motor not working _i stripped my door, rebuilt, sparayed wd40 all over the contacts, and it has been working for the last year.

11. N/s track control arm play _ new bushes are cheap.
12. O/s spotlight cracked, silver backing rusting. _ this is cosmetic, leave to last
13. Rear discs worn_ how bad, are they warped? Not the easiest job, if they will clean up with regular use and no judder then leave.

14. Small hole in hood _ if you can enhance & fix with renovo then do, as a new hood is expensive

15. Slight damage to corner on top of roof -? Does it leak???

16. Bent (torsion??? or something) bar at rear _ is it trailing arm & the pin bent, or A frame and the tie rod bent. Get them to sort it

17. Bonnet sound proofing needs re-sticking _get some heat resistant adhesive from Woolies.( not woolworths)

18. Radiator leaking..re-core - recore

19. Boot gas struts knackered - does it matter?

Have to say I would agree that you wouldn't be looking at much more than £2000 for that lot, based on my vast Peninsula experience, sweepstake anyone? Agree with the general sentiment of only getting what is absolutely necessary done, the boot struts (£80)/hood (£500) are not worth doing unless they really bother you. The biggest problem will be labour as stated before. Good luck - but it will be worth it once the car is fully sorted..

Wayne,
My advice would be to leave as much as possible - none of them seem serious enough to warrant immediate attention.
If you plan to get a bigger wedge at some point anyway then just fix as and when necessary.
I have spent fortunes on previous cars I have had and you never get it back - would only do so now on a car I was going to keep for a long time.
I know of and read often about new first time TVR wedge owners who spend bucket loads getting a car spot on but end up disillusioned with TVR ownership over the cost - slightly tired suspension so straight away 1500 quid full shocks, springs and bushes syndrome.
Nothing wrong with lavishing time and money on a wedge - they deserve it - but only once you have found the one you are going to keep.
