A thread over in the Classics section recently had me rummage through my old photos.

Whilst doing so I found this one from the 1986 Motor Show, I think at the N.E.C. in Birmingham. I was 11 or 12 at the time...

It only took me another 24 years or so to get my own Wedge! biggrin

Isn't that the never seen again 4 seater Wedge or 2+2 - What did they call it? GT? Does the body survive on the TVR heap of bits, or has that all gone now?

I think it's the 420 Saloon.

Bits of it were cannibalised for what became the White Elephant.

I hate to say it but from the front o/s mirror to the rear it looks like a ford granada..Still looked cool though. Is that the word illusion on the number plate?..Another 80s song..

It was indeed the 420 Saloon.

Not really a saloon in the accepted sense though!

Any pics of the 420 SEAC next to it?

I remember seeing the saloon at that motorshow. It is the 420 Saloon and if I remember rightly it did not have a passenger door fitted, legend has it that TVR did not finish it in time for the show and just about got the car there. I'm happy to be corrected on that though.

The "Illusion" number plate actually reads "Saloon" in stripey writing.

Also, is that the back end of "Stainless Steves" old 450SEAC to the left of the picture. If that's the case this maybe the 1988 Motorshow.

I was thinking about the 420 the same colour as my old car that was later painted black, think that was 1987,or like you say it could be 1988.

I'll see if I can find any more pics Steve.

I used to date all my photos when I were a boy, and on the back of that photo I have written 'October 1986'.

It was the 1988 show at Earls Court. I went to see Dave Haughin my dealer who I'd just bought a 350i off. He wasn't there as he'd worked himself into a hole in the ground and was in hospital with flu and exhaustion. He had, apparently, sent out for brochures as he thought he'd just sold his doctor an S

Looked at the sports saloon with horror TVR meets A40 - even worse than the speed 8 barge they showed the following year ( It only had doors on none side!)

Dave Haughin now there was a character! Not a lot he did not know about TVRs all the southern dealers complained to Wheeler that he was stealing their business he was so keen, I had 3 cars from him a new 350 then a 390 and finally my 450 SEAC. RIP Dave.

1986 it is then as the other picture shows a 420 SEAC and the 450 which was Stainless Steves was the motor show car in 1988. Still it's a long time ago, there's been a lot of beer since then.....no wonder my memory is............ now what was I going to say?

I'm just going through about 2,000 old photos, which have somehow got completely out of alphabetical order over the years, and I'll scan any more interesting ones I find.

I quite liked the Speed 8 paperbag
To be fair, by 1988 the wedge style was old hat: its heyday was probably 1975 with the Esprit, so it was a bit last-ditch-attempt for TVR. No wonder they had to come up with something quickly (in the shape of the 'S'), they'd have probably been out of business by 1990.
