Anyone go eastbound through there today? What were the delays like? I've got to go that way on friday and I'm wondering how much extra time to give myself. I can't see them reopening fully for a while.

One lane open in each direction, trafic moving but slowly by all reports.

It all depends on the time of day you are traveling I suppose.

Out of peek times I wouldnt see a problem.

Have been commuting to Bristol for work. 20 mins extra should be enough, 30 if you need to be sure. It is a little strange because there is definitely less traffic so the tolls and everywhere else has been quieter so you make up some time.

I headed west thismorning en route to Swansea and had no problems.
The queue heading west was about 3-4 miles, though.

By the time I was heading home there was a small delay but nothing too much.

PITA. They've lit up the matrix signs telling people in lane 3 to join lane 2 about 1500 yards before the lane ends. So that makes the tailback even longer.

Then you have the knobs straddling lane 2 and 3 stopping people driving to the end of the empty lane 3.

Surely it makes sense to merge in turn where lane 3 is coned off?

So an extra half hour should do it then, got a ferry to catch from Portsmouth, don't want to miss it.

There was a broken down van in the tunnel westbound about 12:30 that caused quite a tailback.

Bishbash. I left NP11 to head to Caldicot and I arrived no more than 10 minutes later than what my sat nav originally calculated.

I have been getting most of the way doen lane 3, then bottling it and pulling in with 200 yds to go. I agree that using both lanes and merging in turn would be best. I am sure that on other works elsewhere they have the 'use both lanes and merge in turn' signs, so is this the correct way? As you say, the overhead signs do not say the lane is closed, but point you into the left lane

those "knobs" are the sensible ones if the idiots who go down lane 3 till the bitter end got a brain an actually filtered into lane 2 as soon as the signs started we would all get through quicker with hardly any loss of speed but it will never happen
Seen "knobs" take direct action twice now an well impressed-if people havent got enough brains to realise thar 1500 yds is a better distance to filter over than 15yds they deserve to be blocked

People should use all lanes available, and if they learn how to 'ZIP' properly we wouldn't have these problems.

I am heading to Tenby this afternoon and I reckon by the time I hit the tunnel it will be bad. Is there an easy route round it?

Depends where you are travelling from but if its the South West/Bristol area I would probably suggest going up the A449 just before Newport, towards Raglan/Monmouth and then on the A40/A465 Heads of the Valley and rejoin the M4 at Neath/Swansea

What's the traffic likely to be like at 19:00 heading Eastbound at the tunnels
on Saturday night?
My digs are just at the tunnels, Brynglas rd to be exact, so I see the hold ups
as I head to work in the morning but luckily I'm heading West. Problem is that on
Saturday night I'll be heading East trying to get home, is there still a big enough
tail back to warrant going through Newport and joining after the tunnel.

ETA - Just heard that it has fully re-opened.

No they are not the sensible ones.

It makes much more sense to use both lanes, rather than creating a queue twice as long in lane 2.

If everybody maintained a constant speed and merged in turn at the end of lane 3, the whole thing would run much smoother.

I didnt know you had to be a member of MENSA to understand good driving practice but since I arent and you obviously are i will bow to your greater interlect
I have been driving through there going to my girlfriends every fri for the last 10 years and over that time the rd works an delays have got worse and more frequent, mostly coming into affect at 9pm till 6am and if I leave work in Norwich at 5.30 its quite a race to beat the lane closure.
On the many occations I have been stuck in lane 1 or 2 and being held up is because we have to keep stopping to let people in who dont filter, brilliant for them they beat the que, squeeze and bully their way in at the last moment and slow all the decent people up and delay them.
People dont need to learn how to "zip" properly, they need to learn how to filter ! whats safer maintain a steady 60,70 an controlled filter over 1500 yds or a little "zip" at the last moment ?
Anyone who,s across lane 2,3 is still doing the same speed as lane 2 an the only people who are slowed down are the idiots who ignore the filter signs and any are the main cause of the problem
