Since when did having a point of view make you a troll ?
Im pretty sure 76 posts in 23 months excludes me from troll territory but doing 50,000 miles a year an going through the tunnels every week for the last 10 years gives me some experiance to give my view on the subject
Came home via the 465 on fri night but hear the tunnels opened again / so will give the m4 a try tonight

I agree with f1rob.
Sensible merging over a decent distance is ok
the "knobs" who speed past to the very end then force their way in cause collisions, cause people to break and a concertina effect is set up with traffic even stopping completely as a result.
if traffic merges and a steady speed maintained then flow is better.
The idiots diving in make vehs brake.
I have seen this many times on M4 and other roads. At Brynglas a few years ago there was a police bike at the end of the merging section gesticulating at these idiots for leaving it so late, and i mean very late!

best i saw was few yrs ago near Pontlliw on M$. Heavy smog due to nearby tip on fire
a lorry blocked the 2 lanes to stop the isiots speed past
when we got near merge point he pulled over and we maintained a decent flow
the idiots out behind him had to wait .
they showed no sense or courtesy - just aggressive get out of my way attitude

I don't know who is arguing with who now.

F1 Rob, my gripe was with people self policing the motorway by straddling lanes 2 and 3 in excess of 1500 yards before lane 3 ends.

Obviously I don't think it's a good idea to speed down lane 3 and push in. The point I was trying to make is that if people used both lanes at equal speed and merged in turn, the whole operation would run much smoother and the tailbacks wouldn't be as long.

Can we all be friends now smile

We can all be friends now the tunnels open ! 298 miles in 3hr 48-a good night !
Afraid I still have to give a thumbs up to the guys doing the self policing as the lane 3 idiots will never learn,Sospan,s post is spot on and ooooh the number of times I have wished for a copper to be at the merge point to give a bit of lane discipline advice to a few people.

That's an average of 78mph.

So you're either making it up, or your maths is well out - as this would mean your speedometer was showing in excess of 85mph for most of the journey.

The IAM teach that you should use all lanes and then merge in turn as the lanes shut down, hence using all available road space not simply sitting in one lane in a large queue ignoring the other 2 empty lanes for a mile. However you should also merge in turn at a sensible distance from the impending cone-car impact point - I don't think there is a set distance but between 200 and 400 yards from the eventual lane closure would seem sensible giving you time to slow and stop quite safely if needed.

People who straddle lanes are wkers and should have there feet and hands cut off to stop them driving (if thats what you could call it). But thats just my viewpoint, so don't quote me on it. Oh and i may have had a bad day too

As i said it was a good night !!! at various points my speedo might of shown over 85!
If i do A11,M11,M25 AN M4 OR A11,A14,M6,M42,M5,M50 ETC there is 1 mile differance to my journey but there are lots of things that affect your journey time
what route you go,your departure time (found that when i did m25 way a lot an use to leave off at 5.30pm was getting stuck near heathrow every time, worked 2 hours longer an setting off at 7.30pm use to make half hour differance to my arrival time) even what month ! (try making headway on the M4 heading west in the autum when the suns mega low in the sky blinding everyone)
Postcodes nr189ru and sa129lu if you want to check the distance
Mostly now i do the journey 9pm-1am ish if i can on the norfolk bound leg on a sunday night 8pm norfolk departure on a fri night
Bloody trip has taken me 8 hours before now so its all swings an roundabouts

It's like everytime I'm about to jump in the car for my commute I check the news and the M4 is
closed in Newport!.

Stop crashing!!

The tunnels appear to be some kind of collision magnet.

those "knobs" are the sensible ones if the idiots who go down lane 3 till the bitter end got a brain an actually filtered into lane 2 as soon as the signs started we would all get through quicker with hardly any loss of speed but it will never happen
Seen "knobs" take direct action twice now an well impressed-if people havent got enough brains to realise thar 1500 yds is a better distance to filter over than 15yds they deserve to be blocked
I disagree - they should merge at the turn point, just like the do on the continent. Everyone lets one in, works a treat!
