Hiya fellas, I'm taking my OH to Cardiff for her Birthday this weekend, first time I've been since I moved to the wrong side of the bridge 8 years ago. Any suggestions for hotel, restaurants, things to do?
Many thanks smile

I stayed in the ParkInn by Raddison when I was working in town. Very close to the town center shopping and resaurants. BIg car park next door if the hotel on is full. The hotel is very sensibly priced too! It was cheap when I stayed and very nice. Rates upto £120 a night could have been achieved but I paid more like £30.

I did stay mid week. Search for pricing as booked via expedia and saved quite a lot!

Hi Twing

Hotels you can't really go wrong with a few of the more upmarket chains: Park Plaza and Radisson Blu being the best of those imo. Or try the independent Hotel One Hundred on Newport Rd.

Restaurants I'd recommend The Potted Pig on St Mary's Street or Pier 64 in Penarth Marina (steak) for a 'fancier' meal, otherwise there are loads of restaurants around St Davids 2 for something a bit more reasonable.

If you've not been back to Cardiff since St Davids 2 was built the city centre will now be an entirely different (and better) place than you remember.

Had a fantastic meal at the Smokehouse in Canton on the weekend. Good value too, but I think you'd probably need to book since it's a small place.

Oh yes good call, smokehouse is very nice. Although if you're coming on a weekend you'll need to book around a month in advance I think, it gets full ridiculously quickly

Haven't had many many meals in town recently, but have heard the potted pig is good.

I know it a chain, but I do like carluccios too, which is at the top of mill street by the new library.

I had an excellent meal in Casanova (Quay St) last week. It would be worth booking though because the place is tiny.

Thanks for all that guys! just need to find a "thing" to do now rather than just rock up and wander around. Any decent attractions to spend a few hours at?

Viva Brazil near Central Station is very good too. They bring various meats around and cut bits off for you. Again, you'd need to book though as it gets busy.

As far as attractions... I've lived here too long for any to jump out on me. A walk around the bay/barrage can be nice on a sunny day. The Dr Who experience is down there too if you're into that.

The museum is worth a wander around too and has free entry.

Thanks for all your help fellas! Lovely city you've got there smile Stayed at Radisson Blu - very good value. Walked the entire city on Saturday, lunch and a few drinks in Barocca, dinner on the Bay at a half decent tapas place. Weather was horrendous so I'll have to plan another trip to have a good look around the Bay. beer

Anyone going to Cardiff from England on the m4 watch out for mobile speed camera trap when approaching the toll Booths - it's a 50 mph limit 1 mile before tolls . Stay safe!

We like cardiff and have at least one weekend a year there. We stay at St Davids Hotel and Spa, with a room with balcony over looking the bay and barrage. The water front and barrage make a nice walk.
